New Build Hiccops

    Ok, I thought, why not make a new thread about building computers. With the way I build them, this could get pretty long 🙂

    Alrighty then.

    Just built a new system since my 9800gt overheated and took out my motherboard with it.

    New system is MSI C2D, 4 gigs, 550w Aztec, with a temp 7900gt for video, the 9800 is in RMA and probably be gone for a couple of weeks.

    Symptoms started with sirens wailing from MSI's software. 10v instead of 12v. Bios says 12v, but not HWMonitor nor Speedfan nor PCAlert4. One other MCI util on the install disk however has DualCoreCore overclocking utility. It reports 12+v!

    So far I've tried switching ram back to the 800's, still 10v. Installed Vista on dualboot, 10v, Re-installed XP after Vista fraked it up, 10v. Removed the Aztec and replaced it with a brand new 550w noname ps, 10v.

    Bios always says 12+v. Every other util says 10v. I just ordered a 700w ps which I have no doubt will not solve the problem, but wtf..

    Other things that come to mind. Somehow it can't be the 4pin moto connector, thats just for P4's, right? Its of course connected. Every other computer in the house reports 12v with these utils, plus I've experienced 'pauses' in any game, so I think its more than just a sensor mis-reporting.

    Sound like I should RMA the motherboard?

    Good idea about the thread. It helps to keep it all in one place.

    You said you got an MCI motherboard. You've said this elsewhere as well, but do you mean MSI?

    You couldn't try the motherboard with another power supply, or the power supply with another board? It could be either the motherboard or the PS, but I'm getting a motherboard vibe off this. If the PS were bad, wouldn't all the voltages indicators more-or-less match up? Whether the PS put out 10v or 12v, the readings would mostly agree. Since there seems to be some disagreement on what the voltage is, I have to think the problem lies on the motherboard.

    Yeah I would suspect the motherboard sensors. Honestly, if they aren't causing other troubles, might not be worth the RMA.
