Hey Guys... I'm excited to say that a few upgrades are in my future, but I can't decide on a video card. The upgrades are going into my existing box. So far I have the MB and ram: Asus P5KE 2 Gig Corsair DDR2
Since I'm not a Vista fan, I'm sticking with XP for now. So does anyone know if a DirectX 10 card work with DirectX 9 in XP? I see the higher priced cards are DX10 capable, but it doesn't say if it'll work (albeit not as pretty) with DX9??
dx 10 will work with dx9 as far as I know. Though honestly, I think DX10 has died and probably will not get much supprt besides what it has with Crysis. Of course this is just my opinion. If it were me I would go with the Nvidia 8800Gt
Yeah Sarge, I knew you were talking about the GT, but I was thinking that the GTS was a higher model. I was wrong! So I did a little more research (thanks for the link) and ended up ordering an MSI 8800GT OC which looks to be as fast as the GTX (non OC)! So I'm psyched!!
Now looking for a good price on a Q6600 and my little monster will be complete!!
BTW - I have the P35 chipset, so no SLI for me!! 🙁
Honestly judge, I am not sure SLI is around for long. As Sarges link shows it will be built into individual cards soon. I requires so much power (which creates heat) and is expensive for not much boost, I am not sure you will see it in it's present form for very long.
I've just been told its best to get the 8800 OC with the most ram too. The ram will be a factor in how long it will out preform other cards in the future.
I've read too many threads about SLI complaints. Lots of problems there. Like Bubba said, the power and heat is usually a big issue with those.
Why would you guys want such a powerful card, your just playing TF2. Heck a 7000 series will run that great 🙂 j/k
Initially I was thinking about doing an SLI or crossfire setup. But with P35 there's no SLI along with the problems mentioned above and crossfire is out because the ATI cards are sucking these days!
This 8800GT OC card should last a while and that's always easy enough to upgrade! I just can't believe the performance you get with the price! Looks like they're trying to put ATI out of business!!! Hmmmm....
Oh and if you order from Newegg, remember to use the link on Gamers Radio. 1-2% comes back here and I've used the money to sponsor give-aways in the past.
As for the GT/GTS/GTX name, it is confusing. In the 8600, the performance order is GT GTS GTX, but in the 8800 it is GTS GTX GT. Goofy as hell.
From what I read, the 8800GT should be more like a 8850 as it's slightly different, newer technology then the other 8800 cards. Leave it to a video card manufacture to make it as confusing as can be.....
My impression was that Nvidia was always GTS GT GTX
remember bigger number doesn't always mean better card.
Often times for bouth companies cards ending in 50 have more ram and slightly slower clock speed ATI 9800 was faster clock but less ram than ATI 9850, this also changes based on the company releasing the card so BFG may have a faster clock in the 9850 while evga has a slower clock. (those are examples and may not be true).

PS: I have an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
I am sure I have told this story here before. Back 182 years ago, I was talking to 3DFX graphics card company (they were the coolest card company way back then, they were then bought by Nvidia and dismanteled). At that time they were developing a card that was still in pre-production and it required a plug went into your wall. NOw that is vid card power
