Looking to get a new motherboard to replace my aging Chaintech 7AJA2
Current SPecs Motherboard: Chaintech 7AJA2: Socket A AMD Duron/Athlon/Athlon XP 200/266MHz FSB, ATX, VIA KT133A + VT82C686B. AGP 4x, USB 1.1, onboard AC97 sound.
Proc: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (266 FSB) Memory: 768mb PC133 RAM Video: ATI Radeon 9600 128 MB - supports up to 8x AGP Audio: Creative Live 5.1 PCI card
Would like to get a basic board that supports my current proc and faster, DDR memory (which I will need to get as well), and 8x AGP. Onboard LAN would be nice but isn't a must. ATX formfactor is a must - but that shouldn't really be an issue.
Any Recommendations? Anything I should stay away from?
I like ASUS. I also like GigaByte. I've had great luck with both. I've heard a lot of people like the Nvidia NForce boards, but I don't have any experience with them personally.
I wish I could provide more details, but I'm an intel guy and haven't paid enough attention to AMD motherboards.
Looks like Asus is the brand to go with so far. Upgrading to DDR isn't going to be too expensive, I am going to borrow it from Bubba's work computer one day when he isn't looking. :shock;
I have had really good luck with my chaintech board - not a problem in 4 years. Also allowed me to go from the AMD 1.0 Ghz proc that I bought in 2001 to the XP 2400+ that I bought this spring. Have been thinking of going with that brand again as well. My only issue with them is that their manuals suck big time. Had to dig around online to get info about jumper settings and that sort of thing....
theres about 4-5 different varieties of it out now, v8N2, v8N-Ultra, special edition, etc....
I know that the Asus A7*N boards are tight for AMD, all use the nice Nvidia Nforce or Nforce2 chipsets and are stable as hell... I think a few of em have onboard 5.1 sound, but I can't recall right now, check out Newegg.com

Thats ok, Your work machine has ddr and I work later than you normally
i've heard that asus has been putting out some crap boards lately, and if they do go bad, asus's RMA takes for fucking ever to get a board replaced.
that being said, MSI's got some really nice boards out now. i'm currently using the msi nforce2 board, can't really remember the model number. it's been rock solid since day 1.
nforce is a REALLY good chipset. i'd suggest going with that over VIA since yer sticking with AMD.
I agree completly on the nVidia chipset... But I still use it on ASUS on not MSI... I have nothing against MSI as I know a lot of people that use them and say nothing but good things... ASUS is just my thang! 🙂
