For a week or so, Me and Scott have not been able to stay online for more than like an hour. If I plug straight into the modem, its all good. But using the router kills it. Then proceeds to blink a red light.
Scott has done all kinds of stuff, and I mean alot. But it keeps crashing. He thinks for sure we are getting hacked. I have no idea at all, but I thought one of you guys might know something.
It has been up-dated from the Lynksys site. Any help will be appreciated.
Hacked... Well... It could be a DoS attack... Setup the logging feature of your router and watch the incoming log... If you get A LOT of traffic [Normally to the same port] non stop... Then yes, that could be it...
Other then that... Could just be the router failing...
Is it a 4 port linksys? I updated the firmware on 2 4 port linksys routers and they both stopped working correctly. I've read there is a big problem with the firmware for model BETR421 or something close to that.
I'd say find an older firmware and try it. If that doesn't work, there is a free Linux firmware that creates a new router all together. If your interested, I can try to find it.
The last thing is your router could have pooped out and you just need to buy a new one. I hope that is not the case, but it is something to consider.
log into the webmenu for the router, click on the log tab, set the IP address for the machine you want the log to be written to, select the enable radio button, and click on apply. click on the outgoing and incoming access log buttons to view the log.
We had one of the linksys BEFSR41s at work until just recently. Has been giving us problems on and off for about 6 months. Bubba might be able to add his 2 cents to this as he was the one unfortunate enough to deal with this. I know it involved basically having to reset the router every other day or so just to keep it functioning, otherwise our service would drop in and out. We got a new router last week and things are all good now.
The newer firmware on that model sux. We were losing our connectivity about once a week and after unpluggin the router for a min and repluggging it in we would regain connectivity. Linksys claimed up and down it was a case of the router starting to fail after 4 years of use. The chances of a Ddos attack against you are very slim, except the one I am currently in the midst of for ya ;-) That'll teach you to kill me so much!! I, unfortunatly know that router all too well, I would try older firmware or replacing it, routers have been cheap lately.
On a side note, never forget the effectiveness of smacking people around to get them to work. Also you can effectivly fix almost any hardware issue by taking it apart and putting it back together from memory (the more "extra parts" at the end the better the better job you did). Sarge doesn't realize that is how I fix things at our office so shhh.
I had the same problem with a brand new router. Their tech support (in India) said I had a bad router and to take it back to the store. The new router did the same thing, but only after updating the firmware. Guess they have an excuse for everything.
Don't worry though. I've heard since Cisco bought linksys, they plan on taking away the nice web interface and replacing it with command line. There will be a new certification, LCNB. Linksys Certified Network Biyatch. Gotta make it all l33t and stuff!
I have an 8 port linksys that has been running in a closet in my house. It's been on for almost 3 years straight. I've rebooted it about 4 times in the last 3 years, so I think it's a great piece of hardware. I will not upgrade the firmware.
I've used the same D-link for years with no upgrades. It's never failed or cut out once. The only time its rebooted is when the DSL modem/ DSL connection fails...
Wow I have never fixed a harddrive that way. I am working on sarge's office machine today I will give ti a try to see if I can get him some more performance.
I have a linksys befsr41 at home that I have had for many years and it's never had an issue. Can't wait to get my LCNB. Last time I got certified in anything it was passing the MCSE for Win NT. About 2 days later they rolled out Win 2000, useful time and money on that one.
Another useful tech tip. When all else fails open it up and wsh it in your sink. That way you get all the dust off it.

He's telling the truth. We had a guy call tech support who said the last tech told him to clean his hard drive up. He used soap and water, let it dry and it seemed to be working better. :-) Really, I heard it with my own ears.
I've had linksys equipment for years, from hub, 1 port router, a switch, 4 port wireless router, and cards and have never had any issues. with my wireless router tho, its been a while since i updated the firmware, so i think i'll hold off a bit longer hehehe.
Our new linksys wireless (befw11s4) router that I got last week, the 1st thing I did was update the firmware. That made the router not work. I had to actually downgrade the firmware to get it back online. Urrrg.
So far everything with the router is OK. I think He knocked some sense into it. lol
But Now My computer is broke!!! As I am posting via Scott's PC.
It will lock up at differant points, and is acting insain. I am replacing the harddrive tonight, but I am not sure if I can get my info off the broken one. Odds are I can, but if I cant OMG am I gonna loose alot. If I loose my new maps, I am going to be pissed.
I wonder if some of the disks may be warped. I HEARD of a possible solution. Since i havent tried this, you're on your own, i take no responsibility.
Stick it in the freezer for a bit so the disks will contract and maybe straighten out, then try to see if you can get info off of it. There is a limited time but hey, its an idea LOL
There is no way I could make that mistake. If you saw my monitor you would understand. Plus getting in and out of my "pc area" is differant than most peoples, so you are aware everytime you half to get up. For one my chair isnt a computer chair, Its a big ass chair with no wheels. Very comfy, but a bitch to move. :twisted: If I get bored enough Ill post a pic of the crappy process. But once im in, its all good.
I told the guys at work about the Freezing a hard drive trick. One guy had to use it and it worked. Took a while to get everything off of it, but he was able to do it in 5 minute segments. Funny, the things you learn working with computers.

I learned it while doing Corporate Tech support for AOL Time Warner. One of the cool guys out at Netscape was chit chatting with me and passed along the tip. MAN I miss those days....
