So my WRT54g router bricked last night. It's always pissed me off, disconnecting everyday requiring me to reset it. Before this linksys I had a netgear that was a piece of crap. It wouldn't allow you to set the same port to forward for more than one computer. I.e. I couldn't set my wifes and my computer to forward the IM port so I had to change default ports. In otherwords it wasn't a router at all.
I am not a fan of linksys (ever since their merger with cisco) and I haven't had good experience with netgear routers.
Any suggestions for a reasonable priced wireless router?
Linksys is about the best priced option, but I know what you mean about the headaches it can cause. I also had a netgear that wasn't worth a can of beans.
Only other cheaper home series I can think of is eLink. I use one for a subrouter off my linksys.. its the easiest way to supply inet to kids with a timer per day setup.
I have a d-link AirPlus Xtreme G wireless router that came with my FIOS that I am happy with. The one time it has given me any problems over the last year I was able to talk to an actual person (who spoke reasonable english) at 11:00 PM on a Sunday night.

I had a linksys for a long time and had no problem with it but I understand that if you get a weird one, all bets are off. It seems to depend on the REV. I think 4 and above are crap but before that they were great. I have a brand new one sitting here of that same model with the longer 7db gain antenna and have yet to put it on my system as it is a REV 5.
I agree with Sarge that the Dlink that came with the FIOS is working great so far. The only problem I have is I cannot log into it for some reason and I did not forget the username and password. 😉
My only real complaint about the Dlink is it only supports WPA encryption. not bad and a HUGE step up from WEP. NEVER use WEP if you do not have to, it sucks. Anyway I really want to move to WPA2 for maximum security. That is why I was going to change to the Linksys.
Get the GL version. It's based on the earlier rev's of linux where as Rev 5+ is based on VXWorks, a completely separate embedded OS. It's funny that they would switch to VXWorks since their moved from VXWorks on their commercial wireless AP's.
Bazooka bought one of the SRX Linksys routers, then upgraded the firmware to an open source linux derivative and he loves it. I forgot all the options he added, but it sounded really cool.
I had the wrt54g ver 5. It has pissed me off for years. I was always upset my rev was the one you couldn't change the firmware to an open source firmware.
So the other day I found a page about getting the ver 5 to allow OSS firmware. I did the flash and the router worked with the new firware. I started to reconfig it then it bricked. I need to troubleshoot it some. but honestly, I think I am just happier to have a new router that is not linksys/VXworks
I have a US Robotics MAXg router.. not bad get decent reception, though it seems to balk at crossing a few brick walls... so I am in the market for a wireless repeater now.
Silent, before you do that, look at the SRX or MIMO technology. It actually increases in strength the farther out you go. It's really pretty cool. I've talked to a few people who were running it in 3 story townhomes from the basement and the signal on the top floor was actually stronger than the second floor.
Will Look into it... have a bit already looks nice and the price range for a repeater is about the same as a new Router.. 🙁 then again I might just try to hook up my Linksys router as a hardwire child to the US Robotics again.. see if I can get them communicating with each other.. Then I could have two access points located in different parts of the house.
