    Remember the laptop hard drive that crashed on me?

    I mounted it in my Ubuntu Linux box, found a script that gave me full access to NTFS and recovered everything I wanted to save.

    BTW, Thanks Bubba for sending me the adapter. It worked great!

    That is really cool you recovered everything man.

    I do want to mention, for those that do not do Linux, you could also have done that with a windows box. You could have just stuck it in any PC as a slave drive. Boot XP and simply copy the files over to another HD, image file or whatever format you require. You do need that adapter to connect a 3.5 HD to a standard IDE cable but they are cheap, like $10 at CompUSA.

    There are also utilities that can access a HD even from DOS. You can read but not write, which you do not care about anyway on a recovery.

    Never seen a DOS utility that could deal with anything but 8.3 granted it would work, but all files would be of 8.3 format. I know it'll work with a slave drive, but windows will refuse to deal with some files (most fo which you don't need, but you can't always batch copy as you like). Being mounted in linux, it doesn't care.

    Bart is a god one. I have a subscription to the updates for that. There are other free utilities that can read NTFS and do it. I do not even know of any that only do 8.3. Of course I never look for those 😉 I think some are even bootable mini Linux ones. Linus is cool 😉

    Still a slave drive in a system should work just fine. I am unsure what files you are referring to that won't be read as a slave. The only thing I can think of is something that is NTFS permission encrypted.

    Actually, I tried to recover this drive in my XP machine. If you remember, it was having all sorts of problems. It was taking 5 minutes just to read a directory. It was horrible. I'm not saying windows was the problem, but I only had 1 IDE on the mobo, so I had to slave it off of the same cable as the OS drive. That could have been part of the problem.

    I even went as far as downloading some recovery software. Again, it seemed to be working, but it locked up the computer so hard, I couldn't tell if it was ever going to work.

    I'm just glad I was able to get everything back.
