Video card spec help

    OK smoked my HD and video card 3 days ago.
    Replaced HD and am running system on onboard chip set. *bleck*

    I think I have found a decent replacement card (I need AGP 8x for the old work hoarse.)

    But before I order it with the company credit card I need to know it's power supply draw - some of the other contenders are greater than my 500w supply can handle and don't want to get a new supply to run an old AGP card.

    I've searched all damn day looking for the power supply requirements of this card. Any one want to take a crack at finding the PS load for this card?

    Just found some info but nothing concrete.

    Their FAQ page.

    2. Power Supply : We've always suggested a power supply with 350W~400W for most AGP series products, so you might need an equivalent or higher power supply. If this VGA card includes an external power connector, please make sure the power supply connects to the vga card ONLY. We do not suggest you to connect the same cable with other devices like HDD/CDROM.

Do you think they mean the cable from from the power supply to the card with no other devices on the same wire string?

    It's wording is wonky to me.

    I tried to DL the manual, but had no luck.

    The wording you mentioned, I think it is talking about not splitting off of the same cable to power other devices.

    What all are you running in your machine? I can't come up with specifics, but reading the reviews on Newegg, some folks are having issues with not enough power from their PS. Of course, some folks are idiots too, so that doesn't prove much.

    ETA: That's what I get for taking a bio break and getting into an argument in the middle of a post.

    Thanks Doc. I think I just may add a $79 - 800W power supply from NewEgg too and call it a deal with the new card and PS......

    With an 800 watt PS, you could power a little refrigerator to keep your beer cold as well as run your computer. 🙂

    I think yesterday in their daily deals newegg had a good PSU cheap, thought about ordering one for when fixing peoples computers.

    With a PSU get a good one and it's much better than a high powered low quality one. I.e. I stick with Antec, they simply make the best. I have been able to put in smaller Antecs and fix issues that larger, lessor quality PSUs kept crashing.

    Point being, you could run this with a 500W, just make sure it's a good PSU supplying constant consistent power. Also with quality comes more effeciency, which pays for itself.

    As for the external power, yes they are asking you to use a rail off the PSU that isn't having any of its other connectors used by something else. This is also where a PSU with 2 or 3 rails will be nice. In a single rail PSU all power consumption will affect all the strands of connectors. In a Dual rail there are 2 different "circuits" so to speak that are independent of each other. In Tri, there are three. This will prevent alot of nagging issues that you never find, because they are cause by power, so while you have enough power, there are small brownouts so to speak on your vid or your HDD (also kills them slowly).

    Looks like its a decent supply. Though it seems ti only has 1 rail. It supplies a constant 500W, and can spike to 550 when needed. You might get away with it.

    It's the "should work" that has me worried.
    The HD and the video card died - from a PS FUBAR or something else..
    I really am leaning toward a new PS also - hate to lose a new HD and a new video card because I failed to recognize the PS was the culprit.

    The saga continues.

    Yah Bubba definitely has the right idea here. If your going to need a new powersupply get at the very least one that has two pipes. Mine is two pipes, but the PCIe connector uses both of them, so I assume it to prevent brownout/spikes.

    edit: Dont' forget to stay within your UPS backup limitations. I bought a 550w ps and ended up having to buy a larger UPS to handle it. When the power went out, it just powered down.

    Hey if its on your company buy the PSU.

    I will never say it'll definatly work. I would suspect it would, though When I bought my latest rig, I thought my old PSU would handle it and it wouldn't.

    If you had failure from the PSU, I would be inclined to push you towards replacing it. They can go bad slowly, they also have stack of Capacitors, which are known lately (past 4 or 5 years) to be unreliable.

    What's better 3 - 19 amp +12v rails or one large 60 Amp rail?
    According to the reviews, a large 60 A rail is better because I would not have to "Manually balance" the power supply load.

    Well it depends, but I would go with the 3 19A. It gives you isolation on each rail. If your HDD has a fit, it's not tied in parallel to your CD and Vid...etc.

    I'll put it to you this way, How many houses do you know of with 1 200A circuit? None, they have a bunch of 20 and 30 Amp circuits.

    Problem is all the 3+ rail PS's I do not recognize the manufacturers.

    Poking around Toms Hardware and ANANDTECH both make mention that Corsair uses two companies to manufacture their power supplies, one is rock solid and builds a greater spec PS than the lable IE: they found the ~750/800 supplies to be stable to 1000W.... !On the other hand the 2nd supplier is just a dog, so much so that they warn customers who are looking in to Corsair that it is a hit or miss purchase.......

    On the other hand both agree that the PC Power and Cooling is dead nuts stable and a very good bargain!

    Houston we have a winner.

    I had one go bad on me. I think I've had one of EVERYTHING go bad on me, but I don't count the stuff that got hit by lightning.

    All you can do is put in the time to research what you buy, and roll the dice with the best bet. Sounds like Duck did the work.

    I'd still buy an Antec again, but not necessarily instead of what Duck picked.

    Not getting the Antec, thanks for the link though Bubba.
    Question on the tip mounted fan, does that mean you'd need a hole on top of your box to vent?

    If so I could not use that one anyway, only venting I have is out the back.

    Ooo come on Duck, that is what drills with 1/4" bits are for.

    I do like Antec, I stick with them if possible, I haven't had anyone else as reliable. The one you picked seems fine. I posted the link becuase you said there were none with 3 rails that you had heard of the brand before.

    p.s. if you go back to that link and look at the picture of the retail box, notice they have the modular power ports, and they also show the old style power pigtail. Someone did bad in photoshop.

    Might as well wait until then to see if I can get a decent deal.

    FYI Just talked with the VP of IT - there getting me a new PC but asked if I could make this PC limp along until after Jan 15 2009.
    He said they have a Dell ready to buy at $5300 !!!! 😲
    (the purchase request was originally sent in for not to exceed $2000)

    Jeff sad of all the users - I need the high zoot PC to be able to run all my apps and be semi-future proof so that's why there going big.

    He also had no issues with spending the $250 to keep baby running until Jan '09 and did agree that I should keep it here as a back up in case the new one S'sTB

    I love my company.
