I'm at a point where I would like to take advantage of things like DirectX 10, but can't because I use XP. I don't like the overhead of vista which IMHO sucks. And yes, I'm forced to use it at work.
But 7 looks like a whole new animal and as far as animals goes, you've gotta buy a new one eventually.
Only if our software is supported by 7 - which I doubt, because it's based on the vista core (right?)
There are things in vista that prevent our network enterprise software licensing and activations form working correctly, so we are at XP pro SP2 maximum (sp3 is vista comms based and screw us in other ways)
So no unless the brain trust figures out how to make all out SW work with 7 were boned, and they are a direct partner (what ever the name is) with microshaft for software computability and application.
Something to do with the comm drivers code associated with the serial port, we need a current loop RS485 differential line drivers and SP2 had em' and they were written out of SP3 - overnight microshaft screwed tens of thousands of our customers.
Presently our ONLY solution is format, reinstall, turn off automatic updates and manually patch to SP2, and Dot net 2.0
Or buy or bugger off an old pc with SP2 and stick it in a closet. Then try to tell that to Gillette or Kodak or GM or Ford they wake up and poof there pc's that ran the process or gathered data died when IT did the auto update..... not our fault not IT's fault, microshaft never said a word on removing the code, and they are firm in not patching because "XP is dead"
No, I hear ya. Every patch tuesday is a huge deal around our office. QA is working through them like mad trying to make sure M$ didn't break something.

I think you answered your own question. I am guessing that price is Full Version, Retail box. If it is that would be consistent with all MS OSs almost forever when they are first released.
I have been running the beta since I got my new laptop. So far I'm impressed. I didn;t have a problems with Vista, myself, but even the beta has a sparkling shine on it. I will be moving to it on release, most likely. But I don't personally have any hardware that requires a physical comm port or parallel ports.
as far as my work is concerned, probabaly going to remain on XP for at least the next couple years. We heavily use Comm/Serial ports. And register hardware still comes with at least 4 of them on the mainboard. Retail systems haven't had a need to change in ages.
Personally, I've been hoping for a switch to USB devices for some time now. Workers at the store level don't understand the power/connection issues associated with PS2 ports, much less Serial ports. USBs they can just unplug them and replug them @ will. and so USB devices would just make my job a lot easier.
