    When I built this computer I purchased a SATA hd for a really good price. Only problem I never got it to work. Anyone know anything about these things?

    As a basic step, I should mention if you're used to the IDE option for supplying power to the drive, hooking it up along with the full SATA cable is not a good idea. And might be the very reason it doesn't work.

    Well actually I have 2 drives the SATA and my IDE. The idea would be to get the SATA up and running and move my more processor demanding stuff over there. However, I've never gotten the computer to recognize the SATA drive at all. I have the RAID controller installed and it shows up everytime I boot up windows xp but no drive...thoughts?

    Some MB's you simply cannot run SATA AND IDE at the same time. The controller can only handle IDE or SATA, not both. I think my MB is like this. You also need to tell the BIOS which one is in use so the controller knows what chip/interface to activate. Did you try SATA only??

    Drix, I am unsure what you mean by the power? SATA uses a different connector but some drives can take the special OR the normal connector. Most just have the new connector but my point is that the power requirements have not changed and you can use normal power connector to SATA adapters with no problems. It is only a thinner connector, nothing special power/voltage wise.

    I am just curious as maybe there is something I was unaware of. Well there are a LOT of things I am unaware of but that is not what we are talking about 😉

    I try the SATA only and it doesnt work. If I do the IDE and SATA the RAID Controller recognizes there is a SATA drive connected...I just cant get it to do anything.

    Does the Raid have a different setup menu outside the BIOS? I know mine does.

    i have 2 sata drives non raid. I have to turn raid off for mine to work.

    Check your MB manual man. you may not be able to use both at the same time, as I said. or it may tall you how it needs to be set up. Every MB can be different.

    Yea, SATA really wasn't implemented very well. On my mobo, I wanted to run my OS from a partition on the SATA using Mirrored Raid. Turned out, I couldn't boot from the SATA at all. I had to put an IDE with the OS in the system. It was kind of a pain at first, but now I like having the OS on one drive and everything else on a faster drive.

    I actually managed to get the SATA drive to work now ( I overlooked something stupid) Now I just gotta start movin stuff over there. The big pain is gonna be BF2 with all the updates and such.

    Well I'm not used to working with XP..so I kept trying to get it to partition the old fashioned way but it wouldnt work that way. So I had to do it through XP and that worked.

    So I got the SATA drive all set up and BF2 is moved over onto it. Any other things I can do to tweak my computer for better preformance..


    Here are some stats:
    AMD 64 3k
    1.84ghz processor
    1 gig of ram stacked

    Radeon x700 ( ya I know it could probably use an upgrade)

    Its sitting as the only program on my 120g SATA HD.

    another 512 of memory will do wonders for how your system handles BF2.

    Reduce how often Punkbuster checks your files:

    I also moved my pagefile off my BF2 drive to a new drive(not just partition, but seperate drive). I did this at the same time I tweaked punkbuster, and now I don't have any hesitation at the beginning of a map. Paladin says the moving of the pagefile may cause a slowdown. . .I'd need him to explain why, I can't, but I wanted to let you know not everyone agrees to do this. . . but I'm running pretty smoothly for now, so I'll stick with it.

    Also, I second Sarge's 'more memory' recommendation. I added another gig (for 2 gigs total) and BF2 likey. 😀
