Well tbf, the Treo is powerful in its own right. Open source, etc, I have no doubt this will be repeated on it as well.
My office is sub basement. An Iphone doesn't work worth a crap down here. Neither did it work well in the rural settings I'm currently at in WV. I'd need to get Pal's Treo here to see how it works. My new rizr has terrible reception in both places as well. A smartphone is only as useful as the 'phone' function ;p . I have to put my phone on a windowsill to even get one or two bars. Sucks ;p -
#6 Lexx,
I was the biggest Treo fan. A couple of months back mine died. Since Treo didn't offer anything made in the past 5 years, they were out for a replacement. I looked at Blackberries as a replacement, they were crap. The little roller ball and the interface suck, I don't know how anybody uses them. I reluctantly bought the Iphone.
I have been rather impressed. There are certainly things I HATE about it, but as a whole, I like it and I am glad to have it. What pisses me off is that Palm did such a horrible job of carrying their market. There is virtually nothing that my 5 yr old Treo doesn't do that my Iphone does. And Palm was doing it 5 years ago. BUT my Iphone does it better, because its newer. If Palm wasn't such a dumbassed company there would have never been an Iphone, now they own the market.
In regards to reception, My Razr got the best reception, I swear I could be in the space station and get reception. My Iphone is second, it does pretty good. And finally my Palm, which had its issues. -
#7 I'm with Bubba. I hate to say it, but the Iphone is pretty damn impressive. I carry a blackberry for work and I hate it. If it goes dead and you recharge it, you have to manually turn the antenna back on. If you drop signal for too long, you have to manually turn the antenna back on. I'm shocked that the phone has been such a worthless piece of shit.
In fact, I gave up and forwarded it to my personal Iphone because I was tired of getting griped at for not answering. -
#8 well if you want to do even more cool stuff jailbreak it. then you can do pretty much everything. -
#9 I have a blackberry heck I'm typing this on it right now. I don't seem to have the antenna problems like you do, but then again this is an older model. -
#10 Bubba Palm is making a come back, just like Apple did when the iMacs came out
I like the iPhone, it is a great phone. Well the phone part is okay. I would never even try to convince people to not get an iPhone if that is what they want. I could have got one easily.
I already have an iPod Touch so I can have most of the apps from iTunes if I want them.
I just researched a lot and for what I wanted, multitasking etc.. the Pre fit the bill.
I am sorry but having to close an application just to see what is in another one is lame. I have my Email running, swipe to another card and see the web page, swipe to see an app displaying something, then back and forth with just a swipe. I do not have to close anything. I just do not like the way the iPhone operates. I love the camera on the Pre and it has a flash, it is FAST to take pictures, close to an SLR in speed. I also have a great Google voice application so 😛
I also have a PalmOS emulator than runs all of my older programs so I am not in any way hurting for apps 🙂
I took a chance and I do NOT regret it in anyway!! However I LOVE my PRE!
I really believe WebOS is the best mobile OS developed so far. It is way easier to develop for it than other OS's. if you know HTML5, CSS and javascript, you already know WebOS.
It has only been out 3 months and already does soooooo much. There is not much on the iPhone that I cannot do with the Pre. They already have a cool utility that allows me to have a MyFi access point. Impressive for 3 months... Imagine in a year....
If you like Linux then you would LOVE the Pre. The Linux core is so easy to work with people have created an entire home brew app scene with over 200+ apps already and several on device applications to DL software, tweak the OS and change all kinds of things.
These are not even the official apps. 🙂
BTW there is a NES emulator for it already and I know a C64 one will come. 🙂
Will the Pre take over the iPhone market, of course not. Apple is way too big, it won't even come close, but I hate iTunes and ATT and my Pre costs be about $40 less per month for the same basic plan. It will also be available on more than Sprint very soon, including a GSM version.
Sprint also just added free mobile to mobile so it is free for me to call everything but a land line and my min start at 7PM.
Remember that the CEO of Palm is from Apple as are a lot of the engineers etc.. Some of them say they are creating the phone they originally wanted to but Steve would not let them do.
They also already have a new model coming out. I am looking forward to see where it goes and I hope it stays around for awhile. -
#11 Isn't it funny that the relatively newcomer (Apple) to the smart device market is the leader, while the arguably original developer of the smart device (Palm) is the underdog? -
#12 That is the shame, Palm through all of its ownership issues really dropped the ball. Palm OS was a better OS for a smart phone, only it was never innovated. Then Palm went to Windows and now to webOS. While web OS may be nice I am not sure it'll ever compete with Android or Iphone OS.
I am not by any means putting down the Pre, only when I needed to replace my Treo... it wasn't available yet, and its also tied to a provider I don't use.
The Iphone has its issues, but I do like it as a whole. Is it a revolution beyond my old Treo... nope. Is it better than anything else offed at the time I bought it, heads and shoulders above.
I hope Palm can pull it out, but I doubt it, they pissed off alot of customers who will never come back. -

Well Apple actually had the Newton so they were one of the first and Palm came along and trashed them. The iPhone is successful ONLY because of iTunes. iTunes is a monopoly and Apple has it. It really is as simple as that. It is all i the timing. if iTunes was not there the iPhone would only be a fraction of what it is. Apple heads will buy anything with that logo on it no matter how good or bad it is. I personally hate iTunes but they do get all the content and everyone uses it to put up their podcasts etc... Just like they use mainly Google for search.Bubbaspanky wrote:That is the shame, Palm through all of its ownership issues really dropped the ball. Ironically a lot of iPhone users are pissed at Apple and came over to the Pre. 🙂
They post in the forums and in the iPhone blogs etc...
I disagree that WebOS cannot compete with Android, it already surpassed it in many way. The Iphone OS is Apple, it is what it is. It has market because it is Apple.
Only time will tell man. It is honestly not a competition to me. I believe there is room for many vendors here. I have nothing against the iPhone, there are a ton of apps and some cool ones even. 🙂
It has several advantages over other phones.
It is simply not my preference as I said, that is why I wanted something a bit different. 🙂
I LOVE multitasking and can never go back to single tasking again.
I honestly just love WebOS. I was going to go Android but they only had the G1, which sucks, and WebOS caught my attention.
I like the more open OS's as people do all kinds of things with them that other OS's do not get.
Hey remember, it took over a year for Apple to get the App store etc... it has only been three months for the Pre and it already seems like it has been over a year with what has been done. -
#14 if iTunes was not there the iPhone would only be a fraction of what it is
this is true to a point. i never use itunes. the only thing i use it for is new firmware but other then that never. i dl my movies and music right on the phone and i don't use itunes on the phone either. Jailbreak baby.Ironically a lot of iPhone users are pissed at Apple and came over to the Pre. smile.gif
They post in the forums and in the iPhone blogs etc...
they are the people that dont understand how to use the phone.multitasking
i can with my iphone. press one button to switch and its fast and the apps all stay open.
i can say that anything most other phones do the iphone can do.
but i never used the new pre so, at the end of the day it user opinion anyways. some will like it some will hate. and some will never know. -
#15 I totally understand that I am a minority of one here and that is fine. 🙂
I am NOT trying to tell people not to get/buy/use an iPhone guys. Chill 🙂
I will say again, I do not hate the iPhone. I have an iPod touch which is basically the same without the phone part. I support them at work. I have used them. I used both.
Mischief as far as I understand from posts, even jailbroke, the iPhone only tasks switches, the apps do not run concurrently. You cannot have one app playing audio, while you browse a web page, load a new page then swipe to the email program while it still loads that page in the background. If there is a way then I am wrong. Then again maybe you do not need that ability so it is all moot.
As I said the iphone is a really nice phone, I came very close to getting one, but I was open minded to the possibility that other phones can be as good or work in a different way that appeals to me. Simple as that.
I do not like the way Apple handles iPhone apps. Did you know that Apple takes a percentage of an Apps sale, which is fine of course, but if someone returns that app Apple does not give back their cut so the developer eats the full price. I also do not like that Apple is all screwy the way they handle updates and upgrades. Slap a camera on the new Nanos but not the touch??? WTF???
There are over 75,000 apps and that is a lot!!! I use a bunch of them on my touch, though a good chunk of them are shitty and finding the good ones is a bitch. 🙂
No doubt the iPhone will be top dog for some time but even with all of that, I did not want one as there are things that it is simply not as good at that I need.
I gave Palm a chance and so far it has not been a let down in anyway. I also pay about $40 less per month than an iphone user on the same plain. I am cheap at times 🙂
Anyway who cares in the end. Use what you want and be happy. If you love it, use it!!! 🙂
I just posted here to dweeb about phones a bit, not argue... 🙂 -
#16 Like damn, how much are you guys paying a month for a smartphone subscription?
Hell I'm happy my new phone has bt and an mp3 player now 😉 I can get internet for $10 a month extra now, but comeon, on a 2x3" screen? hehe.
Think I'd rather have a netbook with wifi if they ever start making them abit better.
