A little love for Joe

Cocker, that is. I've seen him twice. Once with Stevie Ray Vaughan, about a year before Stevie died. He put on a great show. The second time, a few years later, he seemed tired. He's getting up there in years, but at one time, he was one hell of a song stylist. I love what he did with these two songs in particular.

Leon Russell, the piano player, looks stoned as all get out. In other words, he looks like himself 🙂 , but he does a FINE job on this tune. Also, check out how much fun the backup singers are having in the few seconds you get to see them. It's like the best party EVER to them. . .and it might well have been.

Joe Cocker certainly has style. Listening to the Letter reminds me of Alex Chilton who was the Box Tops lead singer and went on to form Big Star and has since done a lot of solo stuff. He is a major influence to a lot of indie artists and wrote one of the classic pop songs of all time in my opinion. This is "September Gurls" - not a live performance, but it had the best audio.

In later years, in an interview (forget with who) Joe admitted that he DID NOT know he looked like he was having epileptic fits when he sang, he said the music took him to places most everyone would never go, and through his singing he tried to take us with him.

That second one from Woodstock was hilarious.
