You can download Iron Maiden's Somewhere Back In Time: 1980-1989 as a 320 kbps wma file(s) for free starting on May 12th. The catch is that the wma's expire (providing someone doesn't break the encryption) after 3 plays. However, you will then be available to purchase the album DRM free to do as you will with it.

I dont play a lot with WMA files... But... Couldnt you just rip the WMA's to CD and then back to an unencrypted format to remove the expiration?

Or convert them to MP3. I would also think if you played them in a player that wasn't windows media player it wouldn't count. Its the DRM that Windows uses.

A lot of wma to mp3 converters won't work with DRM in place. I'm guessing that ripping it to CD might work unless they've worked something into the encryption that would scramble it.

Depending on the cost of the album, I think this is a pretty good deal. You get to check it out for free and then pay if you like it.

Run To The Hills is my all time favorite Maiden song.....

I like the fact they are starting to experiment with Digital Downloads, but I'm not sure if this is the way.....

You know, that is what I would love to see. We've seen new albums released on a pay what you will scale. How about an artist that owns the rights to their own stuff releases an older album this way to see how well it would go over?

Word is that Nine Inch Nails has cleared over $1.5 million on their experiment with downloadable music. This includes an estimated $750,000 from the limited edition $300 box set that sold out in two days.

I think Iron Maiden will do alright with this but maybe not to NIN level of success as it is all previously released material (I think).
