Bo Diddley Dead at 79

    I had the lucky fortune to see him play a few years back. It was an incredible show, but the best part was when he took over the drums.

    He doesn't take them over in this clip, but he does beat a few skins. It's cool to watch.



    This video has a somewhat high reverb, but it's Bo at his best. Crank the high end of the EQ way down and it might not be so bad.




    There's gonna be a jam session in Heavan Tonight....

    Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker and Jimi Hendrix are gonna wail.....

    That second clip is really kick ass. Arguably not the best song he's done, but a great PERFORMANCE nonetheless. If anyone ever wondered why you would go to a concert when you can hear the same performer at home, in recordings that were done over and over until they were near-perfect, then painstakingly gone over by professional producers. . .this clip would be the answer to that question.

    Even at 74, he was still a showman. His feet didn't move like they did in that video, but his fingers were fast as ever. He was a showman's showman. I wound up seeing him by pure dumb luck and I rank it right up there with getting to hang out with Motley Crue for 5 hours.

    Never discount the old-timers. I've seen lots of bands years after they've peaked, playing smaller venues, sometimes on a large bill with a bunch of other 'oldies' bands. . .you get to see them close up, it's a hell of a lot cheaper, and they've just got that many more years experience.

    So, not being a longtime fan of Bo's, what should I look for by him? I feel like I need to edumacate myself beyond the handful of songs that used to get airplay on the 'Oldies' station. . .anybody have any suggestions?

    Bo is one of those guys that is best served Live, off the cuff, playing the stuff he's known for. It's like a new version every time he plays.

    Anything Live, especially video, would be worth it.
