Doc's ADD Music Clip of the. . .hey,is that bacon?

The first in what I hope will become a semi-regular feature.

Today's clip features Edgar Winter, younger brother of blues-rocker Johnny Winter. Johnny's well-known within the Blues community, but he's never achieved the chart success Edgar had with, "They Only Come Out at Night."

Memorable for the hits, "Free Ride" and "Frankenstein" this album featured Dan "I can Dream About You" Hartman, Rick "Rock & Roll, Hoochie-coo" Derringer, and Ronnie "I should be better known than I am" Montrose.

Here's "Frankenstein", so named because it was chopped up into bits and pieces and edited together for the album version of Edgar's virtuoso stage performance, in which he plays keyboards, saxophone, and drums. Previously, it had been referred to by the band as "that double-drum song".

A lesser-known track from the same album, "Autumn". A damn fine mellow tune. Sorry, not a performance, but someone used it as background music for an autumn-themed montage. Thought I'd share it anyway to possibly introduce some folks to it, and for folks that don't care for the bombast of the first clip. Something for everyone!

This is from the soundtrack of "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly". I bought this back when Quake 2 was popular. I thought it would make good music to frag by, and it was . . .until I eventually decided it was better to leave the music off and listen to the game 😲

I looked, but I couldn't find a live version. They had many clips that featured them taking the stage to it, but none when they actually played the full song. I much prefer the original anyway. 🙂

You know... I just never did like the Black Crowes... Chris Robison was always just a little to crackishly skinny for my taste. Somehow that carried over into me not liking the music... So, I'm strange.

However one of my favorite Metallica albums was the S&M album. I liked that they had the guts to make that album, while everyone else was screaming what sell-outs they were. Also, my favorite cover that they did was Turn the page. That jams.

I loved the S&M album. In fact, I had pretty much given up on them when that came out. I believe I asked for and received it that Christmas.

I always said that a lot of the metal songs needed to be set to orchestra. Of course, I really think they got the idea from Apocolyptica, which played Metallica music with 4 cello's.

If you liked S&M, check out Trans Siberian Orchestra's, Bethoven's Last Night. It's an awesome album that tells a great story.

Paul Butterfield's live version of B.B. King's, "The Thrill is Gone".

Paul's vocals are soulful, and his harp is strong, but note the really tasteful guitar solo. An unexpected surprise. Reminds me of the time Paladin and I were at a Paul Rodgers concert with some friends, and I realized partway through that Neal Schon from Journey was his guitarist. 😲 Freakin' awesome.

Before Peter Cesarean (sic) made Barry Manilow look macho, Chicago was a ballsy rock-blues-jazz band with a fat sound, thanks to their predilection for percussion and horns. . .talk about MORE COWBELL!



This isn't a song I was familiar with, but it showcases Terry Kath's vocals and guitar. . .his voice is reminiscent of Joe Cocker & David Clayton-Thomas. To be honest, I don't care for the song, but there are interesting parts to be gleaned.



Here's some raw footage from a 1970 concert featuring their first hit, "Make Me Smile". Sorry, it takes about a minute to get to the music - those with fast connections can bypass some of that, or you can just enjoy the concert experience 🙂

I think Kath had enough balls for both him and Peter Cetera. . .notice how wussy the late 70's - 80's Chicago got with all the ballads after he died.

Chicago is one of the very few bands with a Horn section that I like.

Here's a little Atomm trivia for you.... Chicago 17 was the first concert I ever went too. I was 13 or 14. I still have the ticket stub.

This guy has 93 videos posted - all folk/country, all good to excellent, and all showing exactly the same angle of view. He's definitely avoiding showing us who he is, and he won't say his real name. . . somewhat interesting for a musician, who usually try to get themselves noticed for career purposes.

He has a few where the plays a harmonica at the same time, and he plays quite well considering it's in a rack, and he's also playing guitar.

Definitely a good player. Interesting on not showing the face. Makes me wonder if it is someone already with a record contract that they don't want to violate. I don't recognize the voice though.

Not the greatest video, but the sound is OK, and you'll never have the chance to see them do this again, so take it for what it is.

And a little SRV with Lonnie Mack, Stevie's own 'guitar hero'. The first record SRV ever bought was by Lonnie. Stevie produced (and played on) a CD for Lonnie in the 80's, "Strikes Like Lightning." I bought it, of course! It's raw footage though, so it'll look pretty weird in places where he's running around to get the shots.
