I was doing my usual Youtube rounds, and through some stream-of-consciousness surfing, ended up listening to Joan Jett. Joan's been putting out rock music as long as I've been LISTENING to rock music. . .she has a raw, stripped-down aesthetic that approaches and sometimes crosses into punk, particularly in her early stuff. I've liked some of her stuff for decades, but took her for granted. Kind of easy to do: a stripped down sound, lots of covers. . .but watching her now gives me new respect for her energy, honesty, and dedication to the performance. No phoning it in for her.

OK, let's look past the teenybopper phase. Here's Joan doing "Bad Reputation", something of a return to her punk roots. I've never was 'into' punk the way Sarge obviously is, but this one walks the line of punk & rock enough that I can enjoy it. Reminds me of some Ramones stuff. This is from, "Urgh! A Music War"*, a punk film recorded in 1981. I saw this in the early 80's on USA networks, "Night Flight."
You know, for a guy that isn't into punk, I keep running into exceptions. . . maybe I should explore that.

Mid-80's, Joan hits her height of popularity, acting and performing in the Michael J. Fox movie "Light of Day". Springsteen, also at his height of popularity, wrote the title song for the movie. Here they perform it live. . .Bruce absolutely butchers the vocals, but turns in respectable guitar work.

* Urgh! A Music War acquired a cult following in the United States in the 1980s due to its frequent showings on USA Network. It was aired on VH1 Classic on October 30, 2006 as part of its Rock and Roll Picture series. The film has been released on videocassette but not on DVD. The film rights are currently owned by its original producer, Miles Copeland (founder of IRS Records), however the rights to distribute the film on electronic medium have been "lost" as a result of the collapse of the failed CED or SelectaVision video format. In order to promote the adoption of the format, RCA purchased exclusive rights to Urgh! such that it could not appear on any other media without re-negotiation. When Thomson acquired RCA, SelectaVision was a dead issue for them. During the acquisition the legal documentation and contracts for the distribution were lost. Until they are found or the material passed to the public domain, no genuinely legal distribution can be resolved, because should the contracts turn up, any current agreements could be considered void and the rights revert back to the holder. This could be fought in court, but given the number of artists and players involved the potential legal costs would almost certainly be astronomical.
