Ok, so I know it is illegal to download music via Kazaa or similar that you don't own already. If you have a CD of something there is no need to download MP3's of the songs as you can make them yourself. However, if you have a particular cassette or an LP, can you legally download mp3's of the songs on that particular cassette or album?
I didn't know if there were limitations due to the improved quality of MP3 audio over what you typically have on a cassette or LP.
I think that is a great question... Just wish I had the answer to it... Atomm, you research all the RIAA issues, anything?
Technically you can, but you'll get sued and have to go to court anyway. The RIAA method of bringing people to trial is "Pay us $3k to leave you alone or pay more for a legal battle later"
Remember though that the RIAA lawsuits to date have targeted the sharers, NOT the downloaders. The sharers are the ones distributing intellectual property. The RIAA knows that they can't bust download only people yet (because you can own a copy if you bought the CD) and it wouldn't be effective to do so yet. I wouldn't worry too much if you aren't sharing, but basically, anyone even using Kazaa has a chance to get a lawsuit eventually.
Yeah, I have a crapload (may be a shitload) of cassettes and a few LPs around that I would love to have MP3's of so that I could listen to them more. Right now, our van has a combo Cassette/CD player, but that is the only working cassette player we have - I am guessing that the next vehicle won't have that option. We don't have a turntable at all.
