A Pirates' life for me!

    Just a bit of info on the joy of being a Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

    We lost a guy named Chris Shelton to the Detroit Tigers in 2004, in a rule 5 blunder of epic proportions. He played on the Tigers last year, and had a decent year, especially for a guy that skipped a development level (AAA) when the Tigers grabbed him from us.

    Well, this year, he's hit NINE home runs already, 3 triples, 5 doubles, and leads the league in batting average, slugging percentage, and probably a few other categories as well.

    Who did we choose to protect on the Pirates 40-man roster INSTEAD of Chris Shelton in 2005? I won't list all the names, but in there are the names of three guys who aren't even in baseball anymore, and nobody, nobody, and nobody.

    Yes, we kept three empty slots on the 40-man roster rather than protect this guy!

    Hehe. Saw some of that on ESPN this morning. The guy is on fire, but remember it is only April. It is too early to get overly excited about anything to do with baseball 🙂

    The Red Sox have a great tradition of letting players go who then go on to become amazing somewhere else so I feel your pain. The most recent ownership group seems to be much better about keeping the good players, and those with great potentail and weeding out those that we can find an equivalent for. Not that they haven't made some bad decisions (Getting rid of Arroyo this year for instance), but overall they are doing a much, much, much better job than Dan Duquette (bastard - "Roger Clemens is in the twighlight of his carreer" [1996]) and the Yawkeys ever did.

    Bronson Arroyo was a Pirate, but they couldn't do much with him. . . so was Tim Wakefield, a big contributor on the 1992 Pirates team (which lost a game 7, 9th inning heartbreaker to the Braves in the NLCS). He lost his knuckleball, and the clueless Pirates couldn't help him. He was released, and picked up by Boston. ONE WEEK with the Neikro brothers, and he's been a very servicable-to-very-good pitcher since, an innings-eater who is unhittable when he's on. Better have a long-relief guy ready when he's not 😀

    Bear in mind we traded Aramis Ramirez to the Cubs for a sack of BP balls. If we had Ramirez & Shelton back, the team might contend this year. . .as it is currently, we're on course for our 14th straight sub-.500 season. This organization needs an enema from top to bottom.

    I feel your pain with regard to the guys our teams should've kept, but at least Boston has the money to keep most of the guys they want, and to help patch up the mistakes they make. The Bucs have no bucks, or so say the owners.

    Heh, "Roger Clemens is in the twilight of his career" in 1996. It's funny, 'cuz it's not the Pirates 😛
