Does anyone here know of a good utility to make animated Gifs from avi's or flv files?

I've been looking. . .for freeware, trialware, purchased software, the newsgroups. . . anything I find seems to be virus and spyware/backdoor-laden. I almost got burned by downloading a freeware prg off a website. I started to install, and my firewall told me it wanted to access the net. I canceled the install, and Googled the company. It turned out the site was on this list:

Finding this software seems to be like trying to find a nice, free screensaver. . .difficult and dangerous.
I suppose I'll have to go with the tried and true method - manual screen caps and Imageready. It seems like this would be a relatively EASY program to write. . .have the user determine how often to take a screenshot (by time or frames) and assemble them. Additional cool features would be cropping, resizing, and setting the timing on the frames. Maybe allow for removal of individual frames, and importing of jpgs, bmps and non-animated Gifs into a selected location in the animation. Seems to me that reading the AVI would be the hardest part. -

Well, it looks like it works, which beats the hell out of it not working. . .but Imageready will do what it does, and much more. If someone here doesn't have Imageready, your link might help.
I found this link on the page you linked to:

Animated gif to avi or mpeg. So very, very close.
