Any one else hear this yet?

Just got this mail forwarded to me though a contact that I have no reason to believe would send me phoney, virus or trojan infected mail. But this seems suspicious to me since I haven't heard about this exploit yet.

In breaking news, a Moscow (Russia) based security company has found a way to defeat the security measures in Microsof's XP SP2 release. The company says it has found a way to trick XP SP2 computers into running applications.
The firm, Moscow based Positive Technologies, said that Microsoft made some mistakes in the implimentation of the patch that keeps attackers from inserting rougue code that can be executed.
The good news is that Positive has provided more information, and more
importantly, a patch (run at your own risk, we make no assertions or guarantees about this patch) that resolves the problem.

Like I said haven't heard of this bug yet but thought it was news worthy but not if it's bogus!

Hadn't heard that at all. Will check around and see if it can be verified.

There is a problem with the way encryption is handled in SP2. The Security community has petitioned Microsoft to fix this problem, but Microsoft doesn't appear to be interested.

Even if this email was accurate, there is no way I would install a 3rd party patch, especially from a Russian based company. If it is indeed a problem, Microsoft should address it.

No just didn't know if this was a new threat or easy exploit or not.
I tell ya what though Fire Fox Rox I get nothing even close to the amout of crap on my computer than with MS Explorer. Which makes me want to look into Linix.

I myself re-coded some of SP2 Because it deleated most of my .DLL files that i wanted

But i am not yet sure if this email you have recieved is ligitimate or fake (i myself do not think it is true) but i would say do not install SP2 unless you need it BADLY!

PS. I would only suggest someone try linux if they are good at coding as this is required in even booting up alot of programs and if you do not have these skills you may be buggerd whilst using Linux

See, I disagree with the comment about coding in Linux. I think Linux is the perfect OS to give someone who has never used computers and wants a machine to do basic type stuff like Writing letters, email and browsing the web. You can lock it down to keep them out of trouble and there are hardly any viruses to be concerned about.

Even with that said, I think an average user can get by just fine if they stick to standard programs.

Me, I can get around CLI fine, but give me a Linux GUI and I look like a total Noob..... :-)

Well as an update to all of this I contacted the emailer and I would believe he is legit. but I'm still not dl'ing this.
As far as linux i'm testing a couple different flavors out but I don't have much time to do it. I am just looking for a good business comp. so I don't have to buy another licence for my XP.
Most of the versions are really easy to operate and are bundled with office software.

lol XP is a bit too expensive and yes someversions of linux are goiod if u have a admin looking over evry part and disabling alot of the things people do and where people make mistakes which can be a very painstakingful part of being a admin of a small (maybe worthless) computer/server
