OK, the broadband black hole where I live is about to desentigrate and be open once more. It would appear that I have 1, potentially 2 options about to be available to me.
Currently just started, Wirelesss Broadband (non satellite) with speeds of 1500 down and 256 up is possibly open to me now. I really don't want this but if my 2nd option doesn't come through I WILL be switching to this. Anyone know something about wireless broadband (I think using the wireless B tech)? Latency issues possible?
My second option, which I am currently waiting for the local cable provider to finish their upgrade to their infrastructure. This option gives me 3000 down and 1500 up. This is the option I prefer and am waiting on. Problem is, they are now 6 months behind schedule and I can't get any "availability dates" out of them.
Currently all I can get out of SBC's line is 26.4k and they and I quote, "We have the upgrades in place to offer DSL and increased bandwidth, but we don't have the time to put them in operation. We may have them in place possibly 5 years from now, but I wouldn't plan on it." I want so badly to tell SBC to take their line and shove it after that. I almost did but that would have left me completely internetless.
I sent the president of the cable company an email today. I hope he tells me soon! Hopefully before BF2 comes out.
the agony of waiting for something to come through is awful. I have often wondered about latency issues with wireless, but haven't had a chance to follow up and look into it. We will likely be moving in the next few years, and it will likely be to someplace rural which means very limited opportunities for broadband. I keep my fingers crossed though that it will be someplace that I can still frag online.
Whatever you do Sarge, do not settle for any place that doesn't have broadband. You would regret it.
Tuna used a wireless ISP and had a lot of problems wtih latency and game playing until one day he talked to the owner of the company and told him he was using it for games. They did something to his connection and he was fine from them on. I don't know what they did, but he said it improved his game play tremendously.
If it was completely up to me Atomm, I wouldn't. And I am sure if we do move somewhere without it, it will make me insane. I might be able to make that a condition of any move though....On the other hand, she is talking like she wants to be in a small town, but not necessarily out in the middle of nowhere. If there is cable, their is likely broadband. I'll hope for that 🙂
I heard from my cable guy that in the first quarter of this year they are going to be offering 5000 up and down. I just can't bring myself to pay $60 for the current fastest internet connection 3000k up and down, I'm currently at 256 up and down ADSL for $33. Another $15 and I could get 512k but really it's not worth it to me, it's not like it would make me any better at gaming. I'm hoping that when they bust out with the 5000k that they'll drop the current 3000k down from $60 to something more reasonable. I'd be willing to pay $40 for the 3000k. They've been running fiber optics up and down I-5 for the last, oh 5-10 yrs. so I guess they have to make their money back. Sorry to you guys that don't have much of a choice but that what you get when you live in the booneys. If it's any consolation I do feel for ya!
I was planning on the 3mb since it is cheaper than my phone bill + isp service. 40(phone)[28.8] + 12(isp)=52 > 3mb cable for 49. Yep sbc sucks and expensive too... Actually the company is a local cable company that is offering the service. They are growing pretty quick. I hope they don't "overdoo" it.
Yeah the best broadband I ever had was in a very very small town. It had a quasi local cable company with like 20 channels total, but they had a huge pipe to the internet. The porn was flowing very well there
I finally get to make that call I've been waiting to make, tomorrow! I was talking with the line crew yesterday and he said that they were close to getting cable to my house. Today he caught my attention and said for me to call tomorrow and set up an appointment to get it installed. The line was ready! YEA!
Now to wait till next week to actually get it installed! 8) 8) 8) 8)
On my end, looks like Verizon is going to have it's "Fios" service up and running in town this fall. Thats 5mb upstream/2mb downstream for just about the same price as my 768 dsl 🙂 Here is hoping for "deals" for existing Verizon customers.
Verizon Home doesn't give you an IP that can be seen from the outside world. However Verizon Business does, and you can get a static IP, but it costs about as much as our server does monthly.
I could probably host TS on my pipe however with a little dynamic DNS.
