Commemorative Airforce Museum

This weekend is the Air Show here, the skies have been a buzz all day ( and week ) with sounds of planes and jets practicing their routines. Midland happens to be home of the largest collection of retired planes in the world. (i think)

I love this time of year when we get to see them all flying around. When I left to get lunch for everyone a little while ago there was a jet streaking over head doing rolls and dives, it was cool! Usually on the weekends of the airshow we can feel the bombing runs at my house and run outside to see the planes as they pass over on their way back to the airport.

I saw the CAF do an air raid type demonstration at an airshow in Hawaii a number of years ago (at least I think it was the CAF). I've always loved the WWII era planes.

I recall a few years ago there was an air show in town, we had a small strip and I did not think much of a po-dunk air show.

Well driving around the day before I was overflew at tree top lever by 3 B-17 and a B-25 on pratice approach to the strip (Swanzey N.H. Dilant Hopkins Airport)

1) I damn near pee'd - Poo'd and went blind all at once to see the 4 planes at once.
2) Almost drove off the road I was watching them (B-17 is my ABSOLUTE favorite aircraft in the world)

I'll never forget the sound of the 12 Wright R-1820-97 Cyclone engines was music I'll NEVER forget.
I can only immagine what the sky looked like and sounded like in England during the bombing raid when thousands of them flew.

Man.

The U.S. Navy will also be presenting some of its most important aircraft flying alongside selected CAF World War II naval fighters.

That's pretty cool.

About 10 years ago, I worked for DHL in Oklahoma City. We loaded a little prop job on the far side of the airport away from the jets. It also happened to be the same part of the airport used for the airshow.

Every year, on the friday night show, we would load up the plane, turn the box truck around and sit and watch the night boming raid with all the WWII planes in the air and pyro on the ground. We were just off the runway. It was the best seats in the whole place.

Atomm that sounds really cool, I would like to see it that close.

I won't get to go because I have to work. However my work is a closer to the airport than my house so we should be able to feel it out there pretty good. And we'll get to see the planes fly over. 🙂
