When 9/11 happened, he took a big hit to the economy. Some were worried that it would disrupt everything. In the end, it seemed to have worked out.
Now, the speculation is the Saudi's actually support Radical Terrorism behind our backs.
The dollar starts slipping. The mortgage crysis hits. So, what better time to take the US down, then now. What better way to do it than to push oil prices up as high as possible, devaluing the dollar even further, weakening the economy even further and giving the Middle Eastern dollar higher spending power?
Think it's a conspiracy? I've heard crazier things.....
Crap. I had an incredibly clever, inciteful and witty post almost completed, and it was consigned to the great internet bit bucket. (sigh) The tragedy of a beautiful post cut down before it's time. . .
Short answer: Anything's possible, but I doubt it's a terrorist/radical conspiracy. Prices have been going up pretty steadily for years. They skyrocket in the summer, then go down again - but never to the point they started at.
There are plenty of reasons to gouge us. . .like, for example, they can. You know, their USUAL reason.
Holy Crap...I was thinking the exact same thing at the pump the other day! Just thining how little my money actually gets compared to other parts of the world. Will it come back against the euro? Is this the latest terrorist attack and we don't see it? I can't believe we still buy our oil from there!! Scary times!
I am going to agree with Atomm's statement. Yeah we had our ups and downs in the past but they were 10-20 cent changes. Since then, should there be any "uncertainty" jack it up 50 then back down 15 to ease things. This has gone on and on to where we are today. I've heard many oil people in the community agree that there is no need for the spike in prices. Even though people say there is a "shortage" in oil, there is plenty out there they say. Enough to drive us for several more years.
I think it is a conspiracy to "break" America. Think about it. (Don't get me wrong) 9/11 how would taking out 2 buildings "Destroy America"? By focusing our attention the other direction while they sneak behind us and steal and break us. I'm am Okie, when the Murrah building was blown up, Gas prices did not change. When 9/11 happend, gas prices jacked up to $5 in hours. I think that was a test to see what our reaction would be. We bit it hook line and sinker.

The difference is the Murrah building was blown up by an American, there was almost no (if not) speculation of middleeastern terrorists. 9/11 was immediatly speculated to be Islamic terrorists. The speculators thought gas supplies would be affected because of the calls to insert the US military in the middle east immediately.
I honestly think the US has enough interest in middle east oil that the US has far more control then they will ever let on to. The only conspiracy I can see is the oil companies hiking up the prices and blaming the Middle East. There are many Americans willing to hate Middle Eastern People, countries, cultures, religions because of a small population of evil people.
if only the world actually depended soley on Middle Eastern Oil would these problems be feasible... With the Middle East only responsible for <30% of the oil (thinking somewhere around 20%). The majority of oil is from the North Sea and GoM with new developments in Brazil and Angola, and of course Venezuela/Columbia. And let us not forget our lovely Canadian friends whose oil may be recoverable in the near future due to the rising oil prices and the feasibility of gaining oil from their sands. But I digress. If 20% said lets up the oil barrel price I am sure that would be enough to raise it all over. Then again if a large portion of some superpowers military was in a remote location burning diesel on daily operations that far outstrip normal training exercises I am sure that would help as well.
