Atlantic Ocean (July 28, 2006) – Aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), an F-14D Tomcat assigned to the "Tomcatters" of Fighter Squadron Three One (VF-31), aircraft number 112, completes the final catapult launch of an F-14 Tomcat fighter aircraft. The last launch marks the end of an era for Naval Aviation. The F-14 will officially retire in September 2006, after 32 years of service to the fleet. So you ask what the hell are we replacing the good ole' naval work horse with?

Strange but true, another good ole work horse. Honestly didn't think the Hornet was tah good but I guess the bean counters think so. The 18E is also the replacement for the A6 Intruder also.....

    F/A-18E Super Hornet.

32 years? Wow. I guess the pressure to upgrade isn't the same as in the PC world 😄

I guess if the F/A-18 can perform multiple roles it's probably significantly cheaper to have twice as many of one plane than two different kinds.

I was watching the military channel and they said the F-14 once successfully climbed to whatever crazy altitude it was and blew a satelite out of orbit.

Right, that must have been what I saw.

Yah so really it has nothing to do with this thread. Regardless, planes that can shoot down satelites are cool.

absolutely. Does nothing to take away the coolness factor at all 😄
