Fair Price?

In the next 2-3 weeks I will be upgrading my machine to something a bit more beefy.. I'll be selling my old machine and would like some input as to what a fair price for it would be.

Just curious on the old system Nforce4? or are we looking at that ASUS as being an AGP motherboard? As the ability ot upgrade later is a major selling factor. Mostly, just needing a 64bit in conjunction with the PCI-X. I'm sure they've got a chipset or two since Nforce4 came out... though I really enjoy the fluid nature of mine.

64bit w/PCI-X=$850-950
Not-64bit w/PCI-X=$600-700

AGP's being phased out, plain and simple. That's th eonly difference in price suggestions in my mind. Thing is, will they have to buy a new motherboard as well as new vid-card in a year or two just to keep up? Might as well build a new system if you have to buy both.

It's 64-bit, with the AGP slot. That is one of the main reasons I am upgrading to move over to PCI-X I want to say this Board is NForce3.. I would hope this 6800 would be good enough to last most a decent amount of time still

You are right that AGP is being phased out. With that said though it will take quite some time. I was scared I could not get a descent graphics card at first but they still make AGP 8X versions of most cards and I think they will for some time. Most people do not want to upgrade their MB's JUST to use a new graphics card. Most people are not like us. 🙂

AGP 8X is also still very fast and PCIE (E=express not to be confused with PCI-X, they are NOT the same thing) is turning out not to be the night and day difference they once though it would be performance wise with the current crop. Most cards these days are about the same performance with PCIE being a “bit” faster if at all. I am sure in the future, a few years maybe less, PCIE cards will finally take advantage and be significantly faster than today’s crop but for the foreseeable future AGP 8X is just as good as PCIE like it or not. It is the video cards themselves that are just not fast enough to take advantage of the newer bandwidth. YET!

I just mean I would not rush out to upgrade my MB just to get a PCIE version graphics card as you will not notice a major difference over what you have. As a matter of fact AGP 8X, with double the bandwidth over 4X, is still not fully utilized. The video cards are just not there yet. This will take time.

This is the same argument about SATA over UIDE HD’s. SATA is very nice and best suited or servers and tasks that used to suite the old SCSI interface; anything that does concurrent writing across multiple drives, like RAID. In a home machine it is about the same.

With all of that said you would be silly not buy a MB with PCIE if you are upgrading both anyway as it is the future. PCIE is very cool and I like that in the future newer MB’s will have all PCIE slots. This will allow the ability to use multiple video cards across slots to maybe even chain them together like the old Voodoo days. 🙂

64 bit computing is the future and I am looking forward to Vista and all the new hardware, well from a home standpoint, work is another matter, my life is hell there with it coming out. 😉

No I really have not wanted to play much with XP 64 bit as I do not have the hardware and there is some software problems blab la bla… 😉 .

I was hoping to do this upgrade after Vista came out.. but the LAN is coming up toward the end of April and want a screamer for our tournaments.. Only thing that could throw a kink in the plans is if ASUS doesnt release it's 7900 by then. Far as I can tell only 4 manufacturers have so far.

I played with xp64 for a little while, until programs start having true "64bit" versions, you actually are loosing performance because you have to go through window's 32bit WOW. I went back to 32 windows due to this, and it appears to run faster at this time.
