Gas Prices

Speaking of advocating....I think we must all now email our President, VP, Congressman, House Rep, etc daily until the do something about these gas prices. Once I get their addresses will everyone email spam the hell out of them daily until they stop letting oil companies rape the hell out of us. I looked at gas price indexes for OKC for the last three years. In 2002 they were $1.15/gal, in 2003 they were $1.28, in 2004 they shot up to $1.86. Now for the killer. In the last 6 months, gas has risen $1.00 per gallon to today's insane high of $2.999/gal.

If this continues, everything hauled by truck, train, or fuel based vehicle, aka everything you buy, will go up astronimically, yes, even at WalMart.

The economy cannot withstand this assault much longer and could actually collapse, due to Oil Company greed and leadership that let's it continue.

There are already people who can no longer afford the gas to drive to work. When they lose their jobs, we'll pay more unemployment tax and welfare, insurance will skyrocket, and the final break will occur causing a great gap between the rich and the poor, with no one left in the middle income levels.

Don't think so? I hope not, but sit back and watch. If we do nothing now, we could really suffer in the very near future.

It's time to act. Write your reps, write the oil company owing President and VP, and if you want to, I'll join you for a protest on the State Capital lawn!

Personally, I disagree Goahed. I hope it continues to rise. I hope it gets so expensive that people will actually look into supporting better, more energy efficient alternatives to fossil fuel like the most abundant energy source around, Hydrogen.

Heck, they can now split water into Hydrogen and O2, then burn it. Yes, they can create fire from water, why not use water to create the fire needed to run vehicles? It burns off with 0 emmisions.

So yes, I agree, the gas prices suck, but until we get to the real point that Fossil Fuels are the past and move forward to something cleaner, cheaper and better, we are really just wasting our time.

I hope the gas companies raise the price so high that they put themselves out of business. Maybe someday they will realize their biggest assett is not the fossil fuels they sell, but the supply chain they have created to deliver energy to the masses.

I agree that the oil companies are likely gouging - they always have. To boot they are getting subsidized by the federal government through the new energy act.

The biggest issues with Hydrogen power at the moment is that it takes more energy to create the hydrogen fuel than it produces and that there is no distribution network. In the short term, it looks as though our best bet is through hybrids that continue to push the fuel efficiency higher and higher. There are already a group of people who are "tweaking" their priuses and other hybrids to get over 100 mpg.

As I am in the transportation sector, this is something that we discuss a lot and the implications for the US are widespread.

Currently we have high gas prices + cars that get low gas mileage + people commuting long distances which is very bad for the average person because suddenly their costs are drastically increased. This is the result of transportation costs being artificially low, so low in fact that most people don't consider them at all when choosing a job or where to live. What most people think about in those cases is how much time it takes, not what it costs. That is going to need to change because I don't see the costs going back down.

In the long term we have less and less oil to go to more and more people (part of the price increase we have seen recently is related to huge growth in demand from India and China) so we have to find alternatives.

I only work 1.5 miles from my house so I am not as affected by this as many people, but you better believe that we are re-thinking some other travel choices because of the high cost of gas. We made a choice to pay more for a house and spend less time and money on vehicles (we have only one). I think a lot of other people are going to have to make similar choices.

I was waiting for Sarge to reply to this. But I agree. I hear alot of complaints, and well there are other solutions. If you are in a large city you can commute by bike, walking, public transit, carpools, any number of things. In non-cities, you live closer to work, drive smaller more efficient cars....etc. I choose to live about 10 miles from work, but I know I can commute by bike (and have several times). I also choose to drive the smallest most energy efficient car I could find. The people I keep hearing complain are people who are driving enormous trucks for commuter vehicles. I drove a pickup and I loved it, but at some point I decided on a smaller car, and I am glad I did. If I had the truck it would probably cost $50 or more/week to commute, right now I fill my tank once every two weeks and I haven't spent more than $20 at the pump since I bought the car and that was at $2.71/gal last week.

In Britain it's not uncommon to have $6/gal. I guess I look at it as we have been spoiled. If you want to drive your Hummer I don't care, but don't bitch to me when you need to pay $60 and $70 at the pump. I feel for guys who have to drive a truck for their work, that sux, but well, sometimes you have to dish out money to bring in money. Charge me more to install my roof...etc.

it's just a neverending domino chain that will continue spiral out of control. Raise gas price, raise price of product to compensate gas price, don't raise wages and/or lay-offs to compensate profit loss. More unemployment and poverty = US 3rd world Co due to petrolium pride.

I have a 170 mile round trip 2 days a week for work, it hurts - ALOT. I agree with Bubba, we are spoiled. Knowing that the rest of the world pays more than we do for gas keeps me from getting ticked off over it.

Electric cars are a part of the future, but I myself am waiting for alcohol burning daily drivers. We can get our fuel from potatoes; why don’t we?

You could have a biodiesel now, it is essentially using vegstable oil to power it. Biodiesel is a cheap upgrade from a regular diesel.

Considering I am moving to DC soon, Gas played an important factor in our choices. I really wanted to live near the Metro Line, but I can not afford a 1 million dollar A Frame Shack just so I can walk to the train.

In the end, we decided to spend a little more money than we wanted on a house. I will have a 30 mile commute to work, but my wife will be about 3 miles from work if things go well. It's a triangle of decisions and I wish it was easier, but it's not.

One of the guys I work with went to Germany for a work trip. On a day off, he decided to drive around and see the sites. He had a decent gas milage Mercedes and still spent $100 in a single day on gas. Damn right we are spoiled.

However, if everyone buys cars that get 60MPG, then I firmly believe the oil companies will raise prices to $10 a gallon to compensate. Let's face it, they have us over a barrel and they use the whole fossil fuel argument to stick it to us, yet if you read their annual reports, you will see the Gas Companies have made Record profits the last few years.

It's still not perfect, but this uses electricity on water to produce fire. Sounds like all the elements we need to make engines that run on water.

I actually have a Civic, my wife has a Ford Focus. I wanted a prius, but they were about 32k when I got the civic. I bought the civic from an old woman who is a friend of my family. It was 5 years old with 11k miles on it bought it from her for $5k. Haven't had to do anything to it I didn't want to yet and I am at 50k miles now. I didn't realize you guys got a house already. Most of my firearms were in N.H. safe at my parents house, but I did keep a few illegal firearms in the apartment. I was willing to take that risk, but felt so horribly naked while out on the street knowing that all I could truly carry was a knife and OC. Now firearms must pass consumer safety approvals and you must have an F.I.D. to purchase ammo.... WTF?!

I really don't care what people drive or where they live or spend their money or who they are banging; BUT don't complain to me when your Suburban is costing alot of money for your 80 mile commute. I was born and raised there. Although as far as I know you have always needed an FID to buy ammo there. Even though I have always maintained a license to carry a concealed weapon, I have never felt the need to carry a weapon on me. I understand not all people feel like that. I think it nuts you need a firearms permit to carry pepper spray!!

Realize when the gas prices are going up its because of all the research/probing that is being done to find more oil. The shallow water depth fields are not producing what they used to and as such we are now looking into much deeper water depths.. the difference between 150ft of water and 10000ft of water. As far as quantity at these depths field have been found that have more than enough oil for quite some time.. more than we have used to date time. The problem is the cost of laying pipe down at those depths. Imagine trying to build a steel structure underwater that is 2 miles high and then dig for 2 more miles underneath that structure and not have it collapse under its own weight/dissolve out. And then run the multitude of fiberoptics/expensive lines down to the bottome to have one or two break.. all the while paying anyone out on the rig arseloads of money per hour no matter what. Granted there are answers to all the quesions but even to make a simple buoy to hold that much weight is ridiculous. And yes they do not actually build a rig down there but they do have lines that travel down there.

The oil companies may be making a profit but it is still a marginal profit as much money is going into exploration and research. It is not as easy as it was to get the oil from the ocean floor.

Oh, and the oil sands in Canada. Though opened up and flowing there is no actual efficient method truly available that does not do more harm than it should or use less energy than it takes to process it.


But I will not get into it, a lot of it is the gas companies keeping their same margins of profit. 10% of 1$ is different than 10% of 3$. It about marginal profits not quantitative profits. When it costs more to produce than before the costs jump, simple as that, the companies can and will keep their profit percentages.
