Company condemns Teamsters picketers for using racial epithets during labor dispute
CANTON, Mass., June 24, 2005âNortheast Electrical Distributors/Eagle Electric is calling on the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 25 to publicly apologize to the African-American community, African-American employees and vendors for using racial epithets during its ongoing labor dispute in front of the Companyâs Canton, Massachusetts headquarters.
âIt is truly shocking that, in the 21st century, our employees and vendors are subjected to hearing racial epithets hurled at them from the Teamster picket line,â stated Carl Brand, President & CEO.
The Company, an electrical distributor with 17 locations in New England, is engaged in a labor dispute with infamous Teamsters Local 25. Teamsters Local 25 is the same union local that was under federal investigation for several years for shaking down movie producers in the Boston area, as well as allegedly having a woman beaten for refusing to turn her concession stand over to the Teamsters.
Amid union strike threats, Company locked out 30 unionized drivers
On June 1st, after Local 25 officials threatened to call the Companyâs 30 unionized drivers out on strike, the Company was forced to lock out its drivers to protect its customer service and the livelihoods of the Companyâs 345 other employees.
Immediately following the lock out, working employees, customers and vendors were besieged with threats, physical intimidation, and vulgar name calling by union picketers and officers of the Teamsters Local 25.
Teamsters take to using the âNâ word on the picket lines
The Teamster picketers have begun targeting African-American security guards with name-calling. In particular, is the shouting of the âNâ word, while playing a Richard Pryor tape that has the same vulgar term repeated throughout the tape.
âWhat is troubling about this is the fact that the Teamster leadership from Local 25 not only condones this type of behavior, but seems to encourage it,â stated Carl Brand. âNot only are they using a term that, in any other context, would be described as a âhate crime,â but they are aiming their speakers right at our warehouse workers and guards.â
Company to pursue all legal remedies
âWe have vowed to pursue all legal channels, both locally and at the federal level, to right this wrong,â stated Brand. The legal remedies the Company is reviewing involve the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, the National Labor Relations Board, the EEOC, and the United States Departments of Justice and Labor, including the Division of Labor Racketeering.
Teamsters block warehouse workersâ right to vote
On June 14th, just two days before warehouse workers were scheduled to begin voting on the question of whether to be unionized, the Teamsters stepped in to block the election.
âWe believe the union knew it was going to lose the election,â stated Brand, âand the Teamstersâ leaders decided to use legal maneuvering to deny the warehouse workers their democratic right to vote by secret-ballot.â A National Labor Relations Board election was to have taken place on June 16th and 17th.
Company asks for help in denouncing Teamstersâ use of racial epithets
âWe are not asking for anyone to choose sides in this labor dispute,â stated Brand. âHowever, we are asking for the public to either write or fax a letter to the Teamsters Local 25 leadership and demand a public apology for using racial epithets toward African American employees and vendors.â
