Leonard Nimoy will have a small part in the new movie, playing "Spock". Sounds like the whole movie will be framed as a Spock flashback. In a BRILLIANT bit of casting, Zachary Quinto will be Spock as a young man.
I'd read about this movie a while back on SciFi channels website. There were no details about casting at the time, only it was going to be based on Spock and Kirk's first experiences at Star Fleet.
I have a feeling if this goes over well that they will try to bring a Star Fleet Academy series to life. It's been rumored off and on for a long time now....
Personally, I'd like to see a series about the Star Trek Time Travel Officers we've seen in various series. They could have a ton of fun with it and visit different series throughout the run.
I really think if they want to keep going with the Trek universe they need to completly change things. Like go with a series that has virtually nothing to do with Starfleet, or Starfleet only plays a cursory role. Something of that ilk.
The Starship captain thing is getting old. We've got enough of that out there right now. Do something different, go out on a limb here. I don't want to see the same thing regurgitated at me over and over and over again.
Skorch, I think that was the best and worst of Deep Space 9. It was so much different than any of the other Star Treks. It had a great run, but it built on the strength of The New Generation.
Personally, I think Enterprise was a great idea that had terrible writers. The characters were engaging, the concept was awesome, but the story arc's sucked big donkey balls. Whoever decided to mimic the problems we had today as a society, ie terrorism, genocide, etc, should be shot. I didn't want to see reality reflected in my SciFi. I wanted an escape.
Ya know after all the the series I'm sick and tired of the holier than thou United Federation of Planets. The whole concept of everyone getting along, and no poverty, and no disease, and everyone is just one big happy family is really old. The concept was intriguing at the beginning, and was great for The Next Generation, but I don't want to see that anymore.
I never got into Voyager because by the time it got there I was sick of Starfleet. Gimme a break, a bunch of outlaws and rebels who are fighting not only against the Cardassians, but also starfleet are all of a sudden in the span of one day going to roll over and start wearing Starfleet uniforms, and have Starfleet ranks. What a bunch of hoey. It was the hokiest series up to that point. I could go on forever about that series.
The thing that annoyed me about Enterprise what the inconsistency of the show. I could tune in one week and get a phenomenal show. I'd get all excited about next weeks episode and it'd be horrible. The following week I'd vow not to watch the show, be flipping through channels land on it, and it would be halfway decent. They didn't play up the Klingons enough, not enough fighting, or pretty women.
Leave good enough alone. Let us enjoy the Star Trek universe for all the good times and stop trying to make more and more horrible shows and dilute it even more.
Sorry for the rant, but it's been dying to come out for awhile now.
