Old WWII Movies

With my wife's work schedule, I have found myself with more time where it's good to sit down and watch TV while watching the little one. I've been Tivoing War Movies. It's not that I am a war movie freak, but I always loved them as a kid. Stuff like The Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heroes and that Audie Murphy movie.

So, lately, I have watched some movies I've never paid attention too. Some were good, some were not. I thought I'd start a thread about your favorite war movies and see if there are any worth looking for or renting.

Lately, some of the cooler one's were Sahara with Humphrey Bogart, Force 10 From Navarone with Harrison Ford and Bridge Over The River Kwai. It was way cool to see the tanks from the BG42 mod in Force 10. They were the big Panzers, Panthers maybe.

One I watched recently that was kind of crappy was None But The Brave with Frank Sinatra. It was based in the pacific and that was cool, but it was really cheesy acting.

I've seen a ton of these movies, some I am not even listing, but what are your favorites and why?

Cross of Iron - James Coburn, Directed by Sam Peckinpah. Eastern Front action. Great film.

A Bridge Too Far - Operation Market Garden. One of those great casting groups they used to get for movies like this.

Galipolli (or Gallipoli) Mel Gibson before he was famous. Great WWI story, although very sad as all WWI stories are.

The Lost Battalion - Another WWI movie, but starring Rick Schroeder and made for A&E. I thought it was really well done.

I'm sure there are many others, just can't think of them right now of course 🙂

I'll keep an eye out for Cross of Iron. I have never heard of it, but it sounds cool.

I saw A Bridge Too Far a while back. It was quite long if I remember correctly.

The Lost Battalion is probably one of the best Cable War Movies I have ever seen. It was part of the reason I got interested in the whole Ardennes Forrest thing for Ghost Front. If anyone hasn't seen this and you like war movies, make sure you find this one. It is worth it.

There is one about the British where they create the Skipping bomb. Where the Wellington bombers need to blow up a Nazi dam, so the Brits create this round bomb and fly low over the lake, release the bombs and they skip like rocks over the surface of the water, hit the dam to stop the momentum and sink to explode at th e base of the dam...
True story, good movie, just can't remember the name.

Last weekend I was watching the Military Channel, they have a program called Battleplan.
I had to laugh, I caught my self trying to read the Germans "tags" above their heads, when I could not read them I first thought they had limited distance turned on for the tags.....
Then reality struck... This is REAL WWII footage, DOH!!

It shows a bombing run on the Naval Base at Wilhelmshaven, Germany , I was stationed 50Km from there.

I've seen the rest you listed Duck. Patton is a great movie, but damn, it's logner than A Bridge Too Far......
