polar red sends us news of a story that many outlets have picked up from a European Space Agency press release: the Antarctic ozone hole is 30% smaller than it was during the previous record year. It's still about the size of North America. "Scientists say this year's smaller hole... is due to natural variations in temperature and atmospheric dynamics... and is not indicative of a long-term trend. 'Although the hole is somewhat smaller than usual, we cannot conclude from this that the ozone layer is recovering already,' [one researcher said]."

Dang it! I'm confused....

If the increased solar activity has died down, then this actually supports my belief that it was to blame.

There is a big difference between it's getting worse and it's staying the same. This is saying it's not getting worse, but as always this year was a better year in the standard deviation.

But Bubba, this says neither. It says the hole improved by 30%. That's 1/3 better.

It's the size relative to what you are trying to put in it that matters 😀

Ozone hole being smaller is a good thing but it doesn't sound like we can count on it to stay that way.

When I RTFA it said this year the hole is 1/3 smaller than in past years and illustrated that the size of the hole changes yearly based on weather and other factors. I think the point is that on average the hole is the same as it was, this particular part of the cycle it is smaller, next year it may be 40% bigger.

Now let me use this to illustrate my global warming arguement. Think of the ozone hole issue in the late 80's early 90's.. it was a big deal. We made some small, rather minor changes into how we live life, and we saw that the ozone hole stopped growing. Apply this same idea to global warming. And yes, there was as much and still is nearly as much debate about the science involved. My point again, why not do the small things we know to be better, that have little effect regardless, just in case. I mean is anyone here upset that they have to use R132 instead of freon? Or that their aerosol propellent had to change to a different substance?

Then we increased the cow population and the methane got worse.

OK, My .02 on the Ozone layer. I don't think what we do has much if anything to do with the size of the hole in the ozone. I think it is all related to the earth's magnetic field. Where are the holes in the ozone? at the poles. I don't know how to explain my next statement but look at the diagrams of the earth's magnetic field. I think the ozone holes are created by this. You know how 2 magnets repulse when given the same sides? I think the ozone does the same thing at the poles. I think the earths natural magnetic field repulses the layer at the poles. So in my theory, the poles always have been and always will be.

I'm gonna go the other way on this one, for one reason: I know about the magnetic fields. I've seen pictures of them. I have an Associates degree. The people who study these things have a lot more education than I do, and I would hope that SCIENTISTS have also seen these pictures, and would have looked for a cause/effect relationship. We're all in deep trouble if scores of scientists haven't looked into this, and people like you and me can see it NEEDS looking into.

Unless of course, this IS a prevailing theory that I haven't heard of. Wouldn't be the first one. Those "teams of scientists" don't really run much by me anymore. . . 🙂

Look in the last paragraph. Not long on info, but it's a trusted source that researches it's answers. More searching might yield more relevant info, but it's getting very late.
