Out of Line or Just deserved.

Yesterday the Oklahoma State head coach went off on the Daily Oklahoman for an artical posted. We're having a pretty big debate here at work on whether it was justified or even the right place for this.

Kind of a scary rant, but I think of it as the equivalent of a baseball coach arguing with the umpire. When in the history of baseball has such arguing ever changed a call? It doesn't change anything, but it shows that the coach is behind his players and will fight for them. It's for morale, motivation, and loyalty. Hell, maybe the QB _IS_ a big bag of sensitive nerves, but such an article won't help. His coach vehemently backing him in public might serve to boost his confidence, though.

FWIW, my favorite sports team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, is closing out it's 15th losing season in a row. You can imagine the stories of underachieving and malcontent such a streak must have behind it. One player quit baseball rather than be traded to the Pirates. Another player flat-out refused to fight for his job, insisting that it was his and he didn't need to outperform anyone. Another player, Raul Mondesi, faked family problems and left the team. Less than 2 weeks after he was released, he was playing for another team. Yet, in those 15 years, never once have I seen an article rip a player like that article did.

While Gundy's rant wasn't the finest example of oration, I like his intent. I'm tired of all the media negativity surrounding unpaid college players. It seems like they are always looking to dig up dirt for a story. What possible use is it to know that a player is rumored to be soft? That's nothing but spitefullness IMO and lowers the publishing paper to tabloid status. I'm no OSU fan, but Gundy's moved up a couple notches on my respect meter. 🍻
