I bought a 27" flat screen a few years back. I learned a lot about them back then. Look at the black edge of the screen about the middle on both sides. If you see a pixel missing, that means it is not a true flatscreen, but a normal tv that that tacked a flat piece of glass over. That part really threw me. Look at the less expensive brands like RCA or somebody. You will see what I am talking about.
My 27" is a Toshiba (True Flatscreen) and I really, really like it. You could get a 32" or 36". Both of them are really nice. If you want to go the HD route, I have the Mitsubishi 42". It's a great tv, but entertainment centers are very difficult to find for this tv because it is one of the few tabletop HDTV's at that size.

Here are all the Toshiba's.
Here is my Mitsubishi 42". It came from

As for the DVD player, I suggest Sony PS2. The new one is $149, has progressive scan, and you can get a remote for $20. There is the added bonus of being able to play games on it. :-) Seriously, I love using my PS2 as my DVD player. The picture is really good and I don't have the progressive scan version.
I hope this helps.....
