Satelite or Cable

I'm thinking about telling comcast to kiss my ass and go with Dish Network for a year. They have a promotion (don't they aways 🙂) where you can now pick a family network setup.. 40 channels, 2 rooms, 1 DVR for $40 a month. Finally Foxnews is offered over CNN in this package, and SciFi is included, which makes it more attractive to me for the first time. Last year comcast removed SciFi unless you spent another $20 a month for digital and Scifi subscription... putz's!

I really don't see much advantage to spending $10 more a month for Tivo when I can get a DVR for $5... so you have to program it manually.. big deal. 95% of my normal viewing is on a multi-media PC I have hooked up to my LivRm/Bedroom Tvs where I watch .avi's gathered from Usenet.

Anyone have comments about the DVR and Dish Network? It just seems silly to keep spending $50 a month for basic cable which has a few dozen channels of fluff I'd never look at.

Sarge is the man to talk to here.

Dude! I have comcast and SciFi.

    That totally sucks!

Tivo is not a DVR, it is a way of life......

I have Dish Network and the Dual Receiver DVR 522(?). Have had dish for like 8 years now and have never had a problem with them and they are consistently cheaper than cable.

I know on my DVR, I can't download stuff off of it to my PC. It does have an USB port, but last I knew it was still inactive. I haven't checked on it in a while though.

Cool Sarge. I've heard good things about Dish, and some lousy stuff about DirectTV, so Dish looks better. I only figured for $5 more a month, add a DVR. With usenet, I probably wouldn't use it that much anyways, but a USB port is nice. Give you something to look forward to later.

    Thanks!

We mostly use the DVR functions to record stuff for the kids to watch and to pause programming. The thing is definitely useful during Football season when I can pause a game at the start, go do stuff for an hour or two and come back and skip all of the crap between the action. It also enables me to skip the not-so-kid-friendly ads that are on during football games like for horror films and the like.

I do not think I can even get a dish because I live in the middle of a long hill. ;(

I was tempted a few times but being restrained to just a few tuners was a negative. Also weather affects it a lot from what I was told by people that have them. Some say it is not so bad, others say it is. Maybe it is not as bad where Sarge is. I am not putting a dish down at all though; I think they are very cool. As I said I looked into them a few times I am still open to the idea if I could do it 😉

My cousin had a dish. His dish got messed up by lighting or something… he has not replaced it yet. I do remember watching it and the picture did fade in and out, that sucked. Same with a friends dads (Ev’s dad Lexx) dish when they had it. It also faded sometimes due to weather.

Hell I wish I only paid $50 a month for cable. I pay over $100 right now but have been thinking of trimming that down if I can. They did add HDTV channels and a new box to receive it at not additional charge, that was at least something… I HATE Comcast though so getting away from them is always a good idea 😉

There are new cable companies coming into the area so maybe some competition will help.
Verizon also wants to start into it through the FIOS connection.

I say you can always try it out. If it does not work you can always go back. Got to love that! 😉

You can let me know how you like it 😉

Yah, I won't have any prob with reception, one neighbor behind us has no problem with his so... I'm going to order it next week. Now to decide on how many tuners to pay for. Kinda leaning to just 2 and make the kids do without or share one 🙂. $100 a month is INSANE for cable...ack!

I'd just like to state that I have an antenna that spans the length of my attic that gets more channels than basic cable had in my old Home town. And I'm cool with that.

So let it be written that I'm a cheapass, and that I'm starting to occasionally enjoy spanish television.

    Yes, I know. it's sad.
