I will be very honest here... I really don't care who owns a company as long as the employees of said company get to keep their jobs and it is not outsourced to a country overseas...
If there is anything I hate it is outsourcing out of country to save a buck while placing the US unemployed...
That's a good question. Is it better to be foreign owned with employees in the US or US owned with outsourced employees? I would guess that economically, the first is a better choice as it continues to provide jobs to our citizens, even if the profits are going oversees.
I expect that if we continue to see transportation prices go up, we may start to see a shift of stuff previously manufactured oversees and shipped here, being built here again as it is more economical. Particularly if the cost of doing business in china continues to rise. I have heard of some small companies that produce niche products doing this already. Somewhere I saw something about a furniture maker in the northwest that had returned to making it's products here again.
Concerns about foreign ownership may be a bit overblown. Anyone remember how much of this country the Japanese bought up in the 80's? Changed things a lot didn't it? Who owns most of that real estate now (it's not the Japanese)? The countries that are raking in the cash right now are single resource economies that will not fare too well when the oil runs out, or if we get smart enough to find another way of doing things.
I think it's a concern. What both of these situations show is the reduction in the economic power fo the US. When you think that money means power, this fortells the leveling of standard of living that will start to happen.
I also wondered about a similar thing, Ford makes many cars in Mexico, Dodge makes many of its vehicles in Canada but they are "american owned", while Honda is Japanese owned but yet makes many of it's vehicles in the US South. All vehicles buy their parts of mostly foreign sources.
You have to examine the reasons companies are moving first. If its the only way to escape taxes and unions, then fine, let them go. I wish I could go with them. Senators are quick to point out 'outsourcing' without admitting they are the primary cause, ie outrageous taxes, environmentalism extremes, unfair corporate laws, or an almost blind faith to the labor unions.
Nobody cares we 'outsource' our oil, so whats the big deal with beer?
