Something I'd like to share with you all.

    I mess around a little with wood working, matting and framing and just wanted someone to look at my work. I know you all are some pretty hard critics (Paladin) and appriciated any input you may have, good or bad. Some of the stuff I hand carved while I was in Iraq the first time, can you guess what it was. There's some that I did on a wood lathe at home. If the turned pieces were place in chronological order you would be able to see how I had improved over time. The walnut cup was made for my wife for our aniversary, it was started in kuwait march 2003 and I finished it in June. It was the first thing I had ever carved by hand and finished. The cross was a pain in the ass and was her christmas gift. There's another cup which is made out of cherry I made for her for valentines day the following year while I was still in Iraq.

    Theres alot of thing Ive done over the years and just wanted to share with you all.

    Those are VERY cool Mikey. Wish I had talent like that man.. See now you will have to make me something 😉


    BTW, sorry when I come across hard at times guys. I just been through a lot of crap in my life and have been back stabbed by a lot of people. I kind of grew a skin of always being up front with people because of it I guess..

    I am not one of those people that if a girl asked if I like her dress I would say yes no matter what. I actually told the truth. I figure, why lie to people. If you lie and they really do look bad then that does not serve them well walking around all night in a funky dress 😉

    At least you always know where I stand 😉

    Great work, Mikey! That cup is really impressive. . .it must;ve been a bear to keep it's shape. If I had done it, I would've had to start out carving a vase: by the time I'd cut off all my mistakes, I might have a cup left 🙂

    Here's my only woodworking experience. . .I reshaped this rifle stock. It started out like the bottom stock, and after much cutting, filing, sanding, staining and oiling, ended up as the top hunk of wood. It looks marginally better than the mustard-varnished thing on the bottom, and it feels better in-hand.

    It's likely to be the only such thing I ever do. It's a lot more work than it appears, and if you screw up, wood filler isn't going to fix it. It makes me appreciate Mikey's carvings all the more.

    Thats really good. I cant do stuff like that. I think of something really challenging and I'm determind to do it, that little cross took me about a week and about three tries. And I never did one since. There's a half of chess set there because I got bored with doing the pieces. I dont know what it is but I think of something, which is really out of my league, and try to do it. My scrape wood bin is alot bigger than my showcase. I think the biggest thing is when I'm down there and thinking about home and I get alot of good ideas. That walnut cup was the only thing I had to give to my wife for that aniversary and she loved it. It was my first and I finished it off with dental floss. It was thing I had for a finish, rubbed my fingers raw, but it worked pretty well.

    Pretty cool and they look well done Mikey. I do alot of woodworking myself, but nothing on a lathe. Used to do sculptures in wood WAY back when, heh. Now I do the more practical stuff like build all my kit cabinets and doors, etc. Finally have my shop the way I want it with a new planer and joiner.

    Ya know, I started scupting in stone. Looks to me like you have the talent to take it to another level. I'd suggest grabbing a chunk of lime/sandstone from a hillside, and go at it with a hammer and cold chissle. Marble and granite are easier to tool, but they cost like hell for the raw block.

    Then for some raw fun, pickup one of those small electric chainsaws and scupt on some logs to chop out something like a bears head or a boar. You can practice technics on a block of ice, btw.

    I think you should stop by your local community college and take a couple of fine arts classes. Nice portifio.

    The angel is awesome, nice detail! It all looks good, tis cool you have the skill to make such beautiful things.

    However, doc's rifle stock is very nice too.

    Do you have any pics of your sculptures? I would like to see some if you got it. I'm planning on takeing some classes in texas, I really dont have any training on it. Everything I have done I either fly by my seat or learned it online.

    Well the classes are good because you can interact with different mediums and methods. Other courses of study are design and concept. Where you kinda learn to look at a piece and see its potential, or a hidden object therein waiting to be released 🙂. Take some black/white photography at the same time, and you may be able to see objects in life that everyone else misses.

    You may want to do the full study when you get out in 9yrs. I'd say about 20% of my mates were there on the gi bill. I studied sculpture as part of fine arts theory, so it may be best to mix it with sketching, paint, and photography, while developing your own unique style.
