On October 30, 1938, Orson Wells and the Mercury Theater did a live recreation of H.G. Wells' novel over the radio. Some listeners, tuning in late, missed the disclaimer at the beginning of the show, and in the pre-WWII atmosphere, proceeded to collectively crap their pants.
