    $55 a month for 40 gigs, $1 a gig thereafter in Beaumont, Texas. I need to find some software to meter my bandwidth. . .I'm kinda curious as to how much I use, so I'm prepared when they start that crap in my neck of the woods. I'm sure they WANT to.

    Well I have to say... one one hand I think it's horrible... on the other at this time I would never use such bandwidth, so I say let the people clogging the pipes pay more. Now that with the caveat that the extra fees should goto expansion of bandwidth.

    I still think net neutrality is the correct way.

    That is the main reason I don't have comcast. They bitched and capped me 3 months in for using 20gigs in one month. This is combining webpage loading, ftp'ing, newgroups, downloading etc.

    I was uploading alot to two of my game servers and downloading my limits on usenet.


    I dropped them the next month. I'd rather have slow dsl than worry about taking other peoples bandwidth on the end of the service line. Until now its been sold as 'unlimited'. If they want to sell it to new customers as measured capped service, all the more power to them.

    The reason I think it's a bad idea is because true competition does not exist. In most area's, you get one, maybe two providers if you are lucky. This doesn't leave a whole lot of choices, so they can do what they like.

    In this case, $1 per Gigabyte is way over the going rate for bandwidth from the highly competitive hosting market.

    I don't have a problem with them looking into this, but unless they are actually in line with competitive pricing, I do have a problem with what they are charging.

    Thanks Ephil, I'll give it a try. It's much larger then the other one I was using (it was under 200k), but then, that one doesn't work. . . 🙂

    Incidentally, we've got ludicrous speed here in Hooterville! I just upgraded my connection to 10meg down, 1 meg up. Not quite FIOS, but a reasonable facsimile. . .and no metered bandwidth yet! My Usenet is still capped, but it's free with my internet service. If I wanted to pay for a Usenet provider, that would change.
