NVidia is set to release the the GeForce 8800 Ultra which can be had for the price of a used car. Well maybe not a very good used car, but you could build a decent PC for $829.

That's the top of the line for the series, and there are some others that are somewhat less uber but will be less painful on the wallet.

At the same time, ATI is coming out with the 2900 line of cards, with the 2900 XT priced at around $450 and giving performance levels somewhere in between the 8800 GS and the 8800 GTX.

Some are questioning this particular benchmarking comparison as it put a stock OEM ATI card against a vendor NVidia card that was overclocked. Not exactly a fair fight.

Not that I'll be buying any of these anytime soon but I can dream about it a little.

I love that these just keep getting better and better. I LOVE competition.
That is always great for the consumer. Capitalism at its best. 🙂

To be honest the good thing is when we get a video card it does seem to last a few years. I have not had it too long yet but I have yet to to not be able to run a game at full settings and 1280X1024 res+. I love my 7900GT. I should get at least one more year out of it before the next generation games come out next year.

I only have trouble with my 7600GT when supreme commander gets more than 500 units on the screen. then my framerates go to hell. So now I'm playing on low settings because the battles are known to go 2000+ units. It's insane.
