I need to get a new hard drive for my laptop. How do I tell if I have an ATA-6 or ATA100 or ATA150?

Or even a SATA. Those are shipping in some newer laptops. As for your question you will have to RTFS. S=specs 😉 It should also state it right on the HD man.

If you are unsure you can always get a 150 but yours is probably 100 unless it is brand new and a higher end model. A 150 will run on a slower bus but not the other way around. Well it will run just not full speed etc.. you know what I mean.. 😉

I wish it was that easy. What the hell is an ATA-6?

    I assumed you meant ata-66

And I'm assuming that by his new forum title I must have missed something interesting during FNF. 😮

Yes it has to be 66 I would think. 😉
A 6 bus speed would be just a bit slow 😉
Those are also used more in older laptops.

There has got to be specs for the laptop. Tell me what model it is.
I would get the 100 MB/s as I am fairly sure that is the one you have. 100 seems to be the standard these days as most laptop drive manufactures have stuck with 100 MB/s. Even high-end SCSI drives have a hard time sustaining transfer rates above 100 MB/s.

Also use GHOST, you will need two 2.5->3.5 adapters, to copy the HD image to the new one. That way you will not have to re-build the entire system. If you need any help, just ask.

HAH! I thought you guys were the experts!

It is not a typo. It's the most popular of the three. Guess I need to RTFG..... 😈

Don't need ghost Paladin. I'm just doing a new install. Old HD is kaput. I got the data I needed off of it. I just need to get this running for a LAN party Saturday.

Actually you are right. There is an ATA-6 naming convention, goes from 1 though 8 I believe. I honestly was slacking in my posting and simply forgot about it, sorry. I would have to look up the specs though, do not have those all memorized 😉

You threw me off by mentioning two different naming conventions by also using ata100 or 150 (which I was not even sure of but assumed you meant 133) etc... 😉

I should have known better and have looked things up before posting, sorry. I honestly try to be as accurate as I can when I help people.

Huh, news to me. Just read up on it. ATA-6 is ata-100 or ata-133, ATA 7 would be SATA and ATA 8= flash memory HDD (volitile but not really, but sorta).
    :-)

love how they make things easy on us old-timers

I'd never heard of ATA1-8 before. Learned something.

Guess I will just order the ATA-6 and call it done. :-)

yeah it seems that is ytour answer although within ata-6 there is still ata-66, ata100, and ata 133. Although as Paladin pointed out 133 is backwards compatible so I would imagine you would be fine regardless, and that most of thesse drives are 133's even if they dont' say so. But you know all this.. I am just trying to show off how ub3r l33t I am.

Hey Bubba... I already new you were ub3r l33t!!!!11!1!11

I mean, anyone who can man handle a porcupine like that and not get stuck is ub3r l33t!!!!11!1!11 in my book. 😈
