Looking for an old-style pci gfx card

I tidied up an /forums/geeks-r-us/amd-k6-4401/" target="_blank">old computer I got hold of sometime back. I formatted it and put a fresh install of Win98SE on it, and I gave it to my mom to play Solitaire on it. I'd like to put some other games on there, like Bejeweled 2, but the on-board GFX are pretty poor(and slow), and the only old gfx card I have is AGP.

Does anyone have an old PCI gfx card sitting in a box gathering dust they don't need anymore? I'm looking more for a 'donation' type thing than a purchase, as it's a crappy old computer I don't want to put any money into, and my mother might not use it much. . .she's not tech-savvy. She gets confused when the TV & the cable box get out of sync and the remote starts turning one off when turning one on. 🙄

Also, anyone know a good place to buy 40-50 feet of network cable? I'll check NewEgg, but I haven't looked yet. I want to give her the chance to get on the internet. It would give her something to do, and since she just got her cataracts out this summer and new lenses put in, her vision is better than mine, so that won't be an issue anymore.

Lastly, when the time comes, I may be bugging you guys for networking tips. I tried networking an XP machine to a Win98se machine a few years ago, and it didn't go well. 🙁

I use to have a TNT2 PCI. If I still have it, it's yours.

As for the cable, I went to CompUSA and bought my 50' cable. I don't remember price.

Thanks for the heads-up on the cable, but I'm probably gonna go to the internet for that. Nearest CompUSA is about 60 miles from here at a place I don't go to otherwise. The last time I went, it was because my motherboard was shot and I couldn't get on the internet to buy another. . . besides, I'm familiar with CompUSA's pricing 🙂

Newegg is likely your best bet in terms of cost for the cables. Retailers mark them up a lot.

Yup what sarge said I was getting 50 and 100' cables for like $12 and $17 on newegg. At staples they are $40-$60 and the stuff on Newegg were better cables too!!!. I will look for a vid card. I think I have a few, but I don't knwo what works I will send them all if you don't mind doing the testing yourself.

of course i can't guarentee I have them still, but I will look. hell I will send you some MB and procs, don't know what works and what is dead, but if you want to test, there yours

I have a diamond back pci video card. I'm damn near positive Paladin has a few in his 'warehouse' he calls his computer den 🙂

Check salescircular.com for cables and router. I picked up a router for $5 net after rebate. You can make the cables but I'd highly recommend you do not. Last year I ran a whole house of network wire and installed them all in wallplates, my God that job sucked. You have to have a special tester just to test every connection.

They made it look so easy on HomeTime too 🙂

I just had this flash of. . .intuition, I guess you have to call it. Suddenly, the cause of some of your computer issues appeared in my mind like a rotating, hi-res 3-d model with 8x anti-aliasing. . . I can't quite say why this sprang to mind with such suddenness and crystal clarity, or what could've triggered this. . . 😉

No, it wasn't my house, though I've been tempted at times. I wired a guys house in NorthHills that sells webspace and services from his T1 account. He bought a kit to make the connections which included a tester.

Actually, I was referencing the $5 router. I wasn't gonna insult your wiring ability - although that would've been fun too 😀

I didn't open the router yet, still using the ol' LinkSys, but my son's is working good for him.

The router wouldn't happen to be a BFSR41 or something like that would it?

I love Linksys, but that little bugger drove me nuts on a job once. After going through three "bad" routers, I finally gave up.

Hey they all work man. It is 2 of my 3 UPS's that are acting a bit weird when everything is running on the generator. It is not the amount of power or voltage etc.. I am impressed as the generator is not even at half load and I had everything turned on I could 🙂 The generator runs great and I will say here publicly, thanks for all the help!

Now watch me never have a power outage ever again. Not that that is a bad thing 😉

I have my old wireless router you can have. It is "B" but works fine. All you would need is a PCI wireless card that can be had real cheap these days. I do not think I have any PCI video cards worth anything. They are old and slow and probably not better than what you already have.

I have a D-Link DI-604 router. I need to get a universal power adapter though, since I've lost the original one with all my moves across country. Wireless would be handy, but I have this, and I've never played with wireless before anyway, so that's one thing I don't have to learn yet.

If you could get the the wire, that would be helpful, and appreciated. Thanks.

After checking, I do not have a PCI card anymore. Must have ditched it in the great computer cleanout of 2005.

Yeah Doc it would appear that I got riid of alot of my older stuff, I have about 4 AGP cards. I do not have any PCI.
