I just got an email from Tivo and they are offering me a free 40 Hour Tivo with a 12 month or lifetime subscription. Monthly is $6.95 and Lifetime is $329. The Tivo is factory reconditioned, but it should be just as good as new, if not better. The cool thing is with a hard drive upgrade, you can easily increase the space.
I know I can get one for sure. I am not sure if I can get more than one. If anyone is interested, PM. We will work out the details.

That's pretty cool. I just got a DVR (not a Tivo though). I managed to convince my satellite provider that it was in their best interest to give me one if they wanted to see my money each month 🙂
Getting ready to switch to satellite. Tivo would be nice. I'm game. Anyone have a satellite preference? Trying to pick a provider but don't know many people with it so it's a crap shoot for me.
I have DishNetwork and have had it for ~8 years now. I like them. My only complaint is that they don't include a regional sports network (NESN here) in the basic package. They have several DVR receivers, but aren't Tivo based. DirecTV is the other provider and they have Tivo DVR receivers. They are a bit more expensive, but you get more channels in the basic package.
For each of them, you pay ~$5.00 per month for each additional receiver beyond the first one, which sucks. However, DishNetwork does have a dual receiver series that can control two tv's from a single unit and they do not charge you extra for that.
I have some promotional coupons that DishNetwork sent me. You get a free system + install up to 4 rooms and including a DVR receiver. I can PM you the information if you want. It would need to be used by the end of July and it gives me $5 off my bill for a year (which isn't too bad). Of course you can get the same thing online or by just calling them as well.
The DirectTivo is kick ass. It's the only Tivo that handles true digital and it is the only Tivo that lets you record one show and watch another live station.
If I wasn't tied to cable because of my Internet, I would have one in a second.
My receiver allows me to record one show and watch another live as well. You can also be recording two shows and watch two recorded shows at the same time. I can't imagine a situation where that would happen in my house, but you never know.
The one thing that my receiver doesn't have that Tivo does is the ability to "learn" what you like to watch and record things for you that way. I have to pick the shows, then it will ask me if I want to record every episode, weekly, or just one time.
I think that I pay $5.00/month for the DVR service. The receiver is also "leased" from the satellite company and I think that is $5.00/month as well. I managed to convince them that they didn't need to charge me for that lease fee for a year as they didn't tell me about it up front but when I was on the phone activating the new receiver with the installer guy there. You may be able to get a different DVR receiver than I have w/o the monthly rental fee, but I don't know.

I still use it, I should have paid for the lifetime sub.😉 I have upgraded this one with 2 120GB HDâs so I get about 200+ hours in basic, which sucks. I always use medium quality. Best quality:space ratio. I get about 150 or so hours on this one.

Sarge, I never use the suggestions Tivo function. I just tell it what I want. No time to watch tons of weird shit Tivo thinks I may like and I like to keep my space free for what I want. So you are not really missing anything. 😉
I recently got my Series II one for $99 for the 80 hour . I pay about $20/month for both subscriptions. When the warranty is gone on the Series II unit I am going to upgrade the HD to a 300 WD HD I have sitting here for it.
The series II is nice if you put it on the home network because I can dump shows off of it to my PC. I can also schedule shows from any web browser.
I may soon get another one from my local cable provider for $10/month because it records HDTV and I have been DYING for that. I want this for watching shows like 24 and Lost in HD. HDTV is really cool.
I like and use both my Tivo's now, 3 could not hurt 😉
If anyone gets a Tivo please keep me in mind and let me know because I can use you as part of my Tivo rewards program for getting others to buy one. It does not offer much unless you get at least 4 people to join points wise but it can't hurt 😉

TIVO 3 is coming out in the next year. It will add the ability to record 2 HDTV signals at the same time. It can also record an HD Channel and a Non HD channel at the same time.
I'm waiting to see how that goes. As for quality, I have mine on highest and I manage about 22-25 hours of stuff on my 80 Hour Tivo 2. That works fine for me. If I had more than that, I would never get through it. :-)

I know about Tivo 3 but am in a wait and see. 😉 I have no idea how it could work recording HDTV for me. I get my HD feed through a component output on my cable box so I would then need 2 boxes I guess. Sheesh another expense 😉
Actually, you would bypass your cable box and get a HD Card for your Tivo instead. Cable straight to TIVO HD, Component out to TV. Easy stuff.
