Lunar Resonnaissance Orbiter - is the name of the latest Nasa mission (LRO).

LRO Enters Orbit Around the Moon

June 23 - After a successful insertion rocket burn on the morning of June 23, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's orbit was established shortly before 6:30 a.m. EDT.

Rocket burns initiated by controllers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., have helped the moon capture LRO, which arrived after a five-day journey.

Now LRO begins its primary mission of mapping the lunar surface to find future landing sites and searching for resources that would make possible a permanent human presence on the moon.

Over the next several days, LRO's instruments will be turned on and its final orbit around the moon will be reached.

Doc, I love that cartoon. What's crazy is they try to blame that shit on the network. I'm going to print and frame that sucker!
  20. #30
Yeah what a mess of programming that has been. Its not hard to write that software... in fact I might be able to.

Needless to say very funny cartoon

The news one is spot on except that there were no right-wing pundits saying that it was a waste of money and proof of corruption in the administration 😛
  22. #34
awesome thread, many laughs - thanks 😀

Something for Sarge and Bubba, perhaps.

I like the idea of Geocaching, but I think they're doing it wrong. They should post locations of scenic vistas and cool/interesting natural locations. . .or in the city, post locations of cool landmarks and such. When I was a kid living in an apartment building, we still found interesting things - I knew of a Revolutionary-War-era graveyard that was overgrown and forgotten, and a couple other interesting, semi-scenic spots. At my grandmother's house, I knew of more, and I knew a shale cliff where you could go to find fossils. In some cities, there might be little-used tunnels and such. There was one in Pittsburgh my old boss showed me - just an old, little-used walkway, but it was interesting to see.

I don't really see the point in looking for some bauble that you leave behind anyway. If I'm out camping, fishing, or hiking (and that doesn't happen much these days), I'm out looking at nature.

For example, the article tells about the guy finding a quiet, picturesque place, putting up benches, then putting up more stuff (read the article, I'm not spoiling it). At most, he should've left it at benches. I doubt the other stuff improved the setting, though it is odd and interesting to read about.

When we left Virginia, we ran out of room on the truck. One of the things that didn't fit was some cast iron lawn chairs and table. We looked around our neighborhood for a nice area that someone might enjoy sitting and watching everything going on, then staged them like they belonged there. I still wonder if they are there.

I've always been interested in Geocaching. Part of it is the sense of adventure it could have for my daughter. But another part of it is getting out into nature and seeing whats out there. I've read of some pretty interesting caches, like at the bottom of a lake or the side of a cliff. If that's not adventure, I don't know what is....
  25. #37
yeah I meant to write in regards to this the other day. I have done some caching, it can be fun and the best part of it is that you get dragged to cool places you otherwise would not go. Most are in very scenic locations.

The reason I stopped caching, is because it became too popular. It became less about the nature and the scenic and more about the statistics. People are relentless to add the cache to their numbers. So now anywhere there is a cache, people abuse the area. For instance. It used to be a pretty meadow, in the middle was a couple trees with some shrubs, you would realize the cache was most likely in the shrubs and sneak into them discreetly and carefully. In my case I often wouldn't even open the cache, just see it and leave. Now, people will completely trample the scrubs, the trees will have branches torn off. there will be candy wrappers along the way.

or another instance, you show up at a place, the cache is 1/4mi from the parking, there is an obvious trail that is 1/2 mile long. Used to be people would walk the trail and enjoy it... along the way grab the cache. Now they will blaze a new direct path to the cache.

I'm really surprised that ppl that would be 'into' this would do such things. Maybe if they dropped the damn "treasure" part, and just made it about the area(as I was suggesting above), ppl won't strip branches off trees, and make new trails. . .and maybe folks that are about stats, scores and numbers will give up on it entirely. If there's nothing to search for and find but the location on the GPS, maybe ppl will stop concentrating on the destination, and enjoy the journey.

Atomm, wrt your post, I wish you'd have mentioned this a week or so ago while I was moving. There are 2 large, heavy dressers I would have given the "Atomm treatment", by setting them up in a odd tableau near my old place rather than hauling them 😀
  27. #41
That is funnay and the comments on peoples reviews are nearly as good. I guess I will be ordering a 3 wolf shirt.

Atomm wrote:Dude, that shit freaks me out........

Yeah man, but can you imagine whipping that out if someone fucks with you? I'll set you on FIRE, bitch!!!!!!!! A webshooter-style flamethrower? Only way it's worse is to ditch the butane and use jellied gasoline. Maybe pressurized jellied gasoline in one hand and butane flames in the other, to (somewhat) reduce your own risk. Just douse and ignite.

That's next-level, super-villain level scary shit. Might as well get yourself a trained attack anteater at that point.

  50. #75
Doc, sometimes you worry me...... Feeling ok?

I was thinking along those lines, but then I thought.. you know I bet you could get a jellied type gas to a consistency of those sticky pull apart erasers, use a little co2 cartridge that passes a little pellet of the stuff through the flame stream at a velocity that when at full burn it ignites it, causing it to melt and become sticky, producing a little spitwad size piece of napalm that would stick to skin..

cause we all know napalm sticks to kids, sticks to kids like glue.

Well stick to whatever you shoot it at... have the launcher assembly back enough and the air burst won't disrupt the flame.. instant fun.

Hrmm.. I miss my days with high explosives..

    Don't scare Atomm

I'm still leaning towards the trained attack anteater as my super-villain sidekick. The giant flying shark has obvious advantages and a tremendous intimidation factor, but this little guy makes a strong case for himself as well. He's not much help on the 'attack' side of things, but he's gangbusters in the evil planning stages.
  54. #79
Doc, now you're really worrying me....

You just posted the cutest evil praying bunny picture I've ever seen.....

The drawback with the shark is you'd have to lure all of your victims out to sea or at least close enough to the beach for him to attack. I know all super-types need a weakness, but that's too big if you ask me.

  55. #80
I am sticking to my sharks with friken laser beams on their head.

Normal-sized, non-flying sharks? Bah! I'd sooner choose the evil bunny mastermind.

OK, leave your politics at home, this is a cool video. Al Franken draws the 50 states at the Minnesota State Fair. http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/w...-map-of-the-us/

I am a professional cartographer and I am impressed at how good he does. He muddle West Virginia and Kentucky some, but overall nice job.

Nice job, freehand, and from memory!

Back to the supervillain sidekick for a minute. . .

  59. #84
    That is funnay Doc!
  60. #85
The bunny and the monkey are both good. Now what if we got the bunny involved with the offspring of the monkey and the seagull? Would we then have cute super evil flying monkeys? (As opposed to the not so cute and not so evil regular flying monkeys that is).
  61. #86

Sometimes it's good to make a day, as opposed to always ruining a day. One doesn't want to become too predictable.

Silent Cold wrote:My wife calls this the 'Dear Baby Jesus' bunny..

I think I love your wife. LOVE HER! Sorry 'bout that. There's just so much snark, ridicule and self-aware crazy in that short little sentence, I can't help myself. I will, of course, continue to comport myself properly. . .at least until the flying monkeys are weaned and the bunny's ee-vil plan commences. . .but then I've said too much already.

    Oh, and this:
