    It's a few days early, but might as well get it started. This thread will be a random assortment of links and info found while searching the web. Things too cool to ignore, but not necessarily cool enough to deserve their own thread.

    A Vectrex emulator, in JAVA.

    I picked up one of these in the mid 90's at a flea market, just for giggles. The vector graphics were cool - primitive, but unlike anything else out there.

    A TI-99/4A emulator. This was the first computer I had any real experience with.

    Wow. Those are the coolest space images I think I have ever seen.

    I look at all of those stars and I know we are not alone. It's just got to be impossible.

    Yah, I have to agree. We are so far away from any star that I don't think we will ever get a visit from other lifeforms. Who in their right mind is going to want to spend a 1k years on a trip?

    TI, wow, that link just makes me feel old. My first computer experience was when my boss bought a TR-80 and I had to help him learn how to use it. Alas, if I'd had enough sense at the time to get a proper education in programming, who knows?

    You and me both, man. EVERY damn time I went back to school, someone there tried very hard to talk me OUT of studying computers. Looking back, I'm wondering if they weren't told that enrollment for that was too high, and they needed to talk folks into taking something else. They were convincing though. They convinced ME. 🙁

    Saw a cartoon once - an alien ship was out side Earth looking down at all the space junk, satellites and other shit we left in space - they look at each other and decide there is no intelligent life worth looking for in that garbage pit "down there"

    Yeah think I know that too. 🙂 Bought a wonderful ocean blue hand batiked Shirt with an alien motive printed on it:

    The aliens are on their way back in their flying saucer. They look kind of disapointed - you can see the beautiful blue planet earth in the background. Then your eyes capture the swirl of smoke which is left behind by the flying saucer and in it you find the words:

    There is no inteligent life here to be found.

    At night this Shirt was glowing neon yellow - the saucer the aliens the smoke...

    I think you need to split the space parts to a new thread. it is too interesting a topic.

    I still can not honestly wrap my head around the thought of space and just how utterly vast it is.

    Then I think what is at the end? Is there an end? Or does it warp around like being inside a ball? How can something really be infinite? If it does have an end what is beyond that? Nothingness? What exactly would that be? On and on.....

    I also am a FIRM believer that there just is no way we are th only life to spawn out of all of this. Then to be a small planet circling a small sun at the end of a spiral arm of an insignificant galaxy?? Come on... No there is other life. What kind etc.. who knows.....

    Now that we established that there is life, can it visit us? This is always interesting. First thought logic dictates that the distances are just too vast so that ends that discussion.

    Then I think about all the science we simply do not yet understand. Controlled worm holes, in theory, are feasible with the right understanding of quantum physics, which we do not posses, but what is to say another "race" has not? Other metals and elements that may exist that we are not exposed too that may make a lot of things possible.

    Maybe it really is easy to go past the speed of light with no ill effects, tachyons do it though they are hypothetical.

    Are our "Laws of Physics" really the defining rules of the universe?

    Then if other life has come here, why the conspiracy from all governments all over the world? Hell they cannot agree to stop killing each other so how is this 'secret" kept?

    You mean they (aliens) know enough to only visit the "good" guys?

    Makes one think.

    Look here is what I found about tachyons, I would not consider them as particles that can travel at the speed of light:

    Einstein said yes we can. It is a basic we have to rely on otherwise all the mathematical theories would not be working. But the proven theories at least do work.

    Respective to the conspiration theory: who is taking what drug here? Or is it Duck's influence on ppl that makes them talk, huh, weird stuff?

    Remember, CS Lewis thought you could sink into the moon surface like quicksand 🙂 Based on 'science' from the 20's.

    As far as visiting goes, I think it's possible, but not likely.

    100's of years before we visit another alien planet, we will have observed them using telescopes and know more about them than we can imagine. I wish it was now. I'd never leave the television.

    Yeah its our brains that set the limit here. That for sure. It is so much easier to think of a creator or thing that had set up all that than of a system. That is - I think only due to our own limitations. And nothing against ppl - like Pal - for instance who seem to think different. Maybe I was a little to harsh with my words. But it seemed to me he was more joking about that conspiracy thing than seriously taking into account it could be happening. I mean, what I know of him are some jokes and stuff in the "this does not deserve its own topic..." thread and his posts gave me the impression of a v e r y realistic dude. 🙂

    Ok. As far as our science goes. There is evidence for that our mathematics are valid instruments for measuring the reality. Einstein has proven that, I think, but every Math fanatic knows.

    And I further believe scientists have already gained a lot of knowledge. They did beautiful work. Just the huge distances are keeping us from advancing. Telescopes do not help much because they give us only hints. E.g. we know that a relatively small planet but not as small as earth is circling around a sun just by the colour changes that the planet leaves on the sun. It makes its colour change, so we cannot see the planet, but because the sun is changing its colour blue to red shades due to the gravity the small planet inflicts on it - we know it is there. Recently 2 earth like planets have been found. If you think about the possibilities that are gigantic - yes there certainly is life - but these life forms will have to live with the same limits in space as we do. And the biggest obstacles for getting to find not to speak of communicating which eachother are the great distances. So no. I am sure I can make a lot of funny or serious science fiction stories out of this - but I don't think we as humans are so very limited and its us that keeps the aliens from coming here. We are highly developed primates in my eyes. Beautiful and dangerous. Both.

    I am also convinced that we are extremely lucky life form. Earth provided us with everything and we adapted. Metereoids and Asteroids destroyed a lot, but on the other hand it could have been much more devastating and furthermore I believe in that theory that we as humans actually gained by the vanishing of dinosaurs. Everything here on earth is a miracle. Here everything is so full of life. Take a look at our neighbour planets and they look worse than the Atacama desert in Chile. That is the sad truth. And even if there are planets with life forms out there: well good for them. I don't think they would interest me a lot. With what we got here we still have enough improvement that lays ahead. And its worth it.

    Now the Terraforming theme is interesting. Though I would never want to change planets. 🙂

    I remember a conversation I had about 15 years back. A friend of mine, JG, put forth the idea that maybe what we understood about Physics was wrong, and that one day we'd understand things better and we'd be capable of all sorts of fantastic things. Another friend, Bill, who had a BF Skinner forehead 🙂 , shot this down with an explanation similar to this:

    What we know of physics, mathematics, or most any scientific field, is build on previous knowledge. As we learn and progress, everything we learn agrees with what we knew before. Out on the hairy edges of science, they're still trying to find answers that agree with what we've learned and fit what we observe, but further in from the edges, the core is solid.

    It's still possible that what we HAVEN'T learned will yield amazing inventions and capabilities, but I think we should resign ourselves that pi*=3.14 and 2+2=4, no matter where in the universe we are.

    *=I read a sci-fi book recently where someone found an alien sphere who's ratio of it's circumference to its diameter was exactly 3, so that's still bouncing around my head. 🤪

    I can't explain this well enough, but it's the reason why I believe we will be able to visit planets some day. The problem is figuring out an energy source that can be controlled, yet provide an exponential amount of energy to push us closer and closer to the speed of light. Once we figure that out, then that same energy will generate a field around a spaceship to protect it in flight.

    It's simple in theory and will be done one day.

    It is soooo easy to follow the theory but IRL the impact on human bodies is really harsh.
    We are made for the gravity zone "earth". Our skeleton and mussles are not made for zero gravity environments, boys.

    Nothing is fun in this zone. Imagine taking workouts and sweating a lot, must be a bumber.
    Taking a shower afterwards is no relieve at all...

    And then there is the sun with its dangerous gas eruptions called Coronal Mass Ejections (CME).
    While we on earth are protected them astronauts up there have to take a flight into a small with water walls protected chamber and wait in upright position until the eruption is over.

    No fun. Survival factor: - 75 %.

    So what about that?

    We are not there, but we have to keep pushing.

    Come to think of it, how is traveling in space any tougher than the guys who left Europe coming to America. That was bloody hell as well.

    Well. I'm pretty sure no one on the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria explosively decompressed. 😱

    Mere exposure to the elements wasn't fatal within 90 seconds, they didn't need to bring all the air for their trip (and back) with them, they only needed enough food and water to get where they were going, since wind powered their ship they didn't need to bring fuel, they didn't have to go 25,000 mph just to escape the pull of Europe, and they didn't have to do it all in a ship built by the lowest bidder.

    Otherwise, yeah, it's pretty much the same thing 😛

    No luck so far on the ZPM. Maybe I should've been working on it instead of gaming.

    There were lots of deaths on the ships you mentioned Doc. I'll bet they suffered a hell of a lot. But at least they could vomit without having problems. In a zero grav environment you are not even able to gulp.

    Atomm, I think we need an unconventional energy supply. And there has to be more than enough of it. C that would be it, there is an endless supply in space. We by far haven't reached that level however to converge it ...

    Accelaration - is when you feel the "Fliehkraft" pushing you in the stomach and everywhere. 🙂 Extremely nice. You can feel it good on these small planes too and you gut a better view too. Uuuh, I once had the pleasure. Once. Anyways what I feel about all that motor stuff. Its always the best when one is driving the machine itself. I can have all the confidence in the world and its not about that, it feels simply better one is more united with the machine when one drives it. 🙂 (sounds horribly theoretical but its the truth) 🙂

    I like bikes more than cars. Ducatis are sweet. They have such a special sound that touches ones heart. Here, that's where I am getting emotional again.

    Now gravity is wakin me up. The mayonese I ate was pretty heavy. I need to get a Jägermeister or something for the stomach.

    Endless supply of power in space? Maybe in the sense that there are billions and billions of stars, but harnessing star power is a tall order.

    Relax. You're fluent in multiple languages, but sometimes you tackle difficult concepts, and things don't always come out meaning what you intend, or at least it's not always clear what you mean. It's common for non-native speakers to to use a slightly incorrect word, or to use a sentence structure that is not correct for English usage (that was always my personal problem in Deutschklassen), which can make it difficult to understand what is being said. Lexx's message made no sense to me, so I made a joke, comparing it to one of your more difficult to understand posts.

    I think the folks here have been pretty nice to you, but if you're really going to be accepted, you have to know we're going to joke with you. If you're a visitor, we treat you nice. If you're a friend, we're going to give you a hard time.

    OK, above, you asked why you always have to give explanations for your behavior, now you're telling us you have facial bruises that you don't remember getting, and that you're moonwalking around the house, and waking up in weird places.

    You have NO IDEA the shit we would give Bubba if he said something like that! Really, I just thought about it, and I could go on for paragraphs with that sort of material. And he would not be surprised. That's what we do to friends. When you get that sort of treatment, you should know that you've been accepted. If you don't like that, then honestly, maybe we're not the kind of ppl you want to hang out with.

    No its difficult as hell. But its fun too.
    My opinion about mistakes and misinterpretations is that they are
    a great potential for having lots fun. I see it that way:
    If the reader is a happy positive thinking person he can have fun with it,
    if not I could be a native and still he would be looking for ways to think negative about the statements being made.

    Actually it made my day. 🙂 It saved me from falling asleep at work. There was nothing to do anyways. You know Atomm what the word "link" means in german? Probably not. It is colloquial and means nothing else but "false" "not for real" or "mean". So I never use Links when I don´t know the sender on a personal basis. 😀

    There should be two places in acp to limit this, new user permissions, do not allow im or to admin only, and Im for registered users only. Should also be able to control by group permissions as well.

    Technically this is a private forum so the 1st Amendment doesn't apply - to say nothing about you being physically being outside the US 😀

    Don't get too worked up, we are working on some fixes for the spamming that has been hitting the boards. It is causing some occasional problems that we are trying to work out as we find them. I am trying to set it so that you don't have to get in the moderation queue. It may actually take you logging out and back in to take effect however so do that and see if it helps.

    Tunguska has always been fascinating to me. A meteor 30m wide flattened 20 miles of forest. Wild stuff.

    I always like to read about new medical treatments. It seems like they're always coming up with something new, but it takes forever for them to get to the point of treating people. It's hard to get too excited when you know only one or two things out of every 100 you read about will be proven safe and effective to use.

    Yah, it looks the same as it did when I worked for Rockwell. I did some of the technical illustrations and some aero convention art posters for it back in 1982'ish. What a bunch of knee-jerk people to work for. Everything had security out the wazoo and forget taking any work home.

    I couldn't work like that. The army is knee jerk as it is and I don't even know that much. What I do know is available on the civilian side with NO clearance, but I can't talk about shit other than, I point dishes at satellites and make people communicate. that's about it.

    OK, the AAAAAAHHH! one was cool - strange and amusing, and got right to the point. The History ones fairly sucked and took too long, so I bailed after about 4 of 'em. We had another winner with the ANNOYING one, but took another nose-dive with the MAGICAL TREVOR one. TAKEN looked interesting and well-done, but turned out to be a SCREAMER

    Its just one of this flash news style articles - typical cheap SUN style - that do not say anything really.

    One of those strange cases when a woman uses violence. Not clear if it was drug related tho. Drugs and alcohol turn most ppl´s minds into dangerous ones. That´s what I wanted to relate to with the Redbull Vodka mix. Its very dangerous tho not forbidden in most countries.

    Normally tho its the other way round tho. Women get made drunk and drugged with valium like sedatives added secretly to the drink.

    Oh and the link was not accessible for me - CBS recalled it - , but I found another one. Joaquin Phoenix seems to be either on drugs or is preparing for a drug addict role in his next movie. Super actor. With actors its always somewhat difficult to say if its for real what they are doing. Most have schizophrenic tendencies anyways IMO. (Clint Eastwood is one of the holy exceptions here)
