A couple high-school buddies and I piled into my buddies car and went to a computer show called M.A.R.C.A. (mid-atlantic something something), a GREAT Commodore show. Lotsa lectures, venders, freebies. Three-day trip as unsupervised teens, and it's to a computer show. Oh yeah, I've got geek cred.

Broderbund gave a demo of a brand new game called "Raid on Bungling Bay" at our user group meeting (The PCG, "Pittsburgh Commodore Group", second-largest user group in the world at that time). One of the best action games for the c-64, and I'd say half the auditorium had already pirated it.(no, I'm not proud, but that was part of the zeitgeist of the early days of computers) One of the members got up and proceded to kick ass in the game, while the guy giving the demo wondered how the hell he was so good so fast. . . 😀

A couple guys I went to 'computer school' with wrote this steaming pile of shit:

They also demo'ed this at the PCG, and I remember trying to come up with kind words for them afterwords. Note that the publisher was called Paragon software. A better name would've been Travesty.

I made one mistake. I had a 1581, 3 1/2 Floppy Drive for my C128.

I did however help run a Commodore 64 BBS that was the proud owner of an 8280, Double 8 Inch Floppy Drive. Get this. My friend bought it at a swap meet in Dallas. It was pulled from some government site and sold. He was 15 and saving for a car. Instead, he plopped 1200 down for that bad boy. We had one of the coolest online file sharing BBS's in the whole state. ;-)

As for wiring, I took a DIN plug, cut it, and spliced the left and right audio to RCA, then ran it to my Home Stereo. You can't imagine how cool digitized music is on a pair of Fisher 15's. hehehehe

To this day, I still have my 300 Baud Commodore modem. I paid $70 used. In order to use it, I had to manually dial, then hit ATA when I heard the other end pick up. You better believe it was a pain in the ass manually dialing Busy BBS's during Peak Time...... hehehe

ooo lordy, my experience is very co-incident with Atomms, I ran my own BBS, I have a 10Mb HDD for my C-128 that ran my BBS. Wrote the whole thing myself. It was great. I used it to win my 6th grade science fair.

At the time, we couldn't even touch a 10MB hard drive for Commodore's. They were something like 10K.

DocJon and I go way back to the C64 and Amiga days. I have known Lexx since the early Amiga days as well. Lexx ran his own BBS called NoGurusHere and was REALLY into FIDONET!!
Just ask him sometime. 😉

My very first computer exposure was on a mainframe in the 70's playing Star trek. That did it, that was just so cool I had to get into computers. I never looked back 😉
I then started out on a TRS-80 back in 79-80. No sound so I put an old radio on top of the monitor and tuned it in to static. The monitor generated some sounds that way. Worked great for the Star Wars game I had. Just ASCII graphics 😉

I also did the usual hacking of the C64. I actually taught myself assembly language on it and actually wrote some cool stuff. I also got paid for creating a custom Amiga Basic DB program for a beer distributor on the 64/128.

Got into the Amiga big time. I actually was one of the first people I knew to have a HD. I paid a ton of money for a 80MB HD. 😉

Had good times with the Amiga. 😉
Used PC’s since the old two slice toaster days at work but actually went PC for home around 94 with a 486 DX2/66 😉

DocJon and I, along with other friends, used to play Doom all connected together on a table with thinnet 😉

Been playing FPS games ever since 😉

VERY cool gadget. Even with all the Commodore computers I've owned. my friends have owned, and with the PET's my computer school had, I never saw one of those. . .although we used 8-inch disks on the IBM System 32's & 34's we had at the school.

The 300-baud I had, I had to manually dial, listen for the screech, remove the plug from the earpiece and plug it into the modem. I eventually graduated to a 2400-baud that would dial out without needing to use a phone, so I wrote a telecom program with a wardialer built in. In compiled BASIC :oops: It worked, though, and I could log in and do my bbs'ing with it. . .except if I wanted to DL files or play a game like RISK on-line.

I knew Pal would be around to share his geek cred. That 80-meg HD of his, I won't say how much he paid for it, but I will say I've owned cars that cost less. :shock:

Lexx's BBS was a top-notch Amiga board.

Heh, my favorite piece of geek-cred: When I went to computer school, some folks recognized my name from a program I'd written to organize and search your software collection. I got them the latest update, and I was asked to autograph the program disk. 😄

I know my 300 baud was about the same price as my c-128 was. of course my BBS was sponsored by my school so even though I was under 12 I had the monetary support of a town. Wow! I forgot all about that game..... I remember dialing in just before midnight to take my turn, then coming back after midnight to take another turn. Wasn't that around turn 20? :-)

A little later, but a game I loved to play online was called Wasteland. It was on X286 PC BBS's. I think there was a network version through Fido.net.

I didn't need a disk notcher. I had a 3rd party drive called a Zip Drive. I could flip a switch and it would read/write to the backside as if it was notched. There were something like 10 dip switches on that thing. I don't remember what all it did, but I think I could even turn on compression to squeeze more on a disk. The only problem with doing that was my 1541 couldn't read it.

Heck, I got excited with CNet BBS added the ability to push your speed from 300 to 450 after connecting.

Three hole punch for me. I had until last year a set of floppies with my bbs on it. I tried to read it on a c64 emulated drive and had no luck. I beleive I destroyed the disks therafter

I might have know what all this meant had my 1st pc in 7th grade, I guess about 87', not get stolen. They did leave my Tandy 286 though.
I got board of drawing colored lines and had just about burnt up the 1 game we had on a 5" floppy, don't remember the name but it was some off road quad racer game. Boy did those joystick suck.
I remember writing at least 20 lines of code to have a few colored bars on the screen.

I just got back from Gigantour in Vegas 😎 first concert I have ever been too, and Megadeth ROCKED! It was freakin awesome. Though I have to say the rest of the line up didn't really fit IMO it was all death metal screaming incoherent stuff.

I think it was Arch Enemy that opened - music kicked ass untill...their lead singer...a chick 🤔 started the screaming - I would so own a karaoke cd of them but the screaming just isn't my thing. I can see all this except the splines. Just can't see how a book can be appreciated without some wear and tear. Kinda hard to read a book maybe opened about 40%. I like to see the entire 2page spread open enough to speed read it correctly 🙂

Bubba, as someone who worked as Cell-Phone call center rep(customer service, Change of Financial Responsibilty, New Accts) I well and truly appreciate the stupidity that is to be found in call centers. When I needed to involve other departments, I often (read:always) found it was necessary to call 2 or 3 other reps before I could find one that could understand the problem and what I needed of them.

Honestly, the language skills, and lack thereof, was shocking. Towards the end of that job, I pretty much hung up whenever I found I was talking to the reps from India. There was a very basic language barrier that had to be crossed before getting to the tech, and in my experience, I seldom got to the tech issue.

Yes! It is a penis burned into the grass with fertilizer as part of a school prank. It must of been fixed between when the MS picture was done and when the Google one was done.

The MS pictures are often at much higher resolution, these are typically from a company called pictometery.

The point, was, I think, not to look like a geek, but to see how a different viewpoint changed your level of immersion and how "real" a situation feels. It's REAL, but it's a different viewpoint, and the person that is 'you" does not look like you - will you perceive what happens as less real, and will you act differently?

That the guy looks like the biggest nerd since the "Tron Guy" is just a happy side-effect 🙂

Cool. I am a HUGE fan of his. I discovered him on the web a long time ago before he was really known.

I did not hate "The Sarah Conner Chronicles" at all. I just think it lacked a certain feel to it. it felt rushed to me. Maybe it will grow on me more. Hell Rainbow is in it so that is always a good thing 😉

I am more disappointed in "The Bionic Women". Well it was just the pilot. I hope it grows a bit, it was a bit confusing and the characters seemed flat to me. They really left a LOT go without any explanation, or very very little. Maybe the gaps will fill in as it goes. I think it needed a 2 hour pilot.

The actress that plays the Bionic Women was on an English Serial called EastEnders (Playing Zoe Slater) that I have been watching since the very beginning. I never missed an episode since 1986 when it started.


Wheaton is trying really really hard to break out of the kid image. he has been on ATOS a number of times. He seems cool but tries to be too serious I think. Overall though I think he is a good guy.

It was the best costume I have ever seen. I watched it a few times. The spacing between the eyes seemed less than human so that originally lead me to believe it was real. I also noticed the nostrils movement. Man that was well done.
