A Wilhelm Scream sign to Paper & Plastick

A Wilhelm Scream A Wilhelm Scream have signed to Paper and Plastick according to a report from Alternative Press. Guitarist Trevor Reilly commented:

The ethos of [Paper and Plastick] matched the ethos of our band. We like his ideas, respect his practical business sense and admire his passion for bridging graphic arts and music and his desire to simply make cool ass shit to stoke out the fans. He’d never say it but I think the dude’s trying to save punk rock as we know it. I really do.

According to the same source, the band’s first release on the label will be a self-titled, five-song 12-inch out this fall. The band produced the EP in their home studio, and it will be mixed by Matt Bayles (Minus The Bear, Mastodon).

Far enlists fans to contribute gang vocals on new song

Far The reunited Far has been hard at work on their comeback album, and the band is attempting to enlist fans to contribute gang vocals to a song they’ve written for the new record. The band insists that the contributions don’t have to be perfect, and

Far first broke up in 1999, a year after the release of what would become an extremely influential record, Water & Solutions. In the meantime, frontman Jonah Mantranga went on to perform music with New End Original, OneLineDrawing and Gratitude, as well as under his given name. Guitarist Shaun Lopez went on to form The Revolution Smile who to date have released four records, the last being Summer Ever in 2006.

Far reunited to tour the UK in 2008 and signed to Vagrant last March.

Magic Bullet Records offering much of their catalogue for free download

Through a partnership with newly launched media website gimmesound.com, Magic Bullet Records has posted much of their catalogue for free, no-strings-attached download. The label explains:

“Evolve or die! Rather than try to fight, sue, or waste incessant time bad-mouthing the music-acquiring habits of people who “illegally” download full albums created by the glut of “hard-working” 20-somethings piling into vans and smoking the reefer in every city, forward-thinking individuals have been spending the last few years acknowledging the behavior and figuring out how to adapt accordingly. ”

“I have already uploaded over 20 full albums for immediate no-cost download (including some of the newest releases!), with another 80 or so that will be steadily available for download in the coming weeks and months. Please see the list/links below and feel free download every last song and album your heart desires.”

The business model of gimmesound.com is an interesting one; bands are compensated by the advertising revenue generated by the site, and the website also donates 2% of their net revenue to a charitable cause of the downloader’s choice.

Magic Bullet releases up for free download thus far include albums from Boy Sets Fire, Austin Lucas, This Will Destroy You, Frodus and many others. Check them out here.

Deftones scrap new album

Sacramento, CA’s Deftones have decided to scrap their new album. Titled Eros, the album was a group of songs that featured currently hospitalized bass player Chi Cheng who was in a severe car accident. Says the band:

The songs recorded for Eros are very special to us as they are the latest with Chi (and we certainly hope not the last); they have history and significant meaning to us. However, as we neared completion on Eros, we realized that this record doesn’t best encompass and represent who we are currently as people and as musicians. And although those songs will see the light of day at some point, we collectively made the decision that we needed to take a new approach, and with Chi’s condition heavy on our minds while doing so. We needed to return to the studio to do what we felt was right artistically.

You can read the full statement here, and read about Chi Cheng’s condition here.
