U.S. Senate Gets Behind Internet Radio
Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Sam Brownback (R-KS) have introduced the Internet Radio Equality Act which will vacate the CRB’s (Copyright Royalty Board) decision to increase royalty fees. The bill will set a 2006-2010 royalty rate that is equal to the same rate paid by satellite radio stations, 7.5% of revenue. The bill will also change the rate setting standard and re-sets the royalty rules for non-commercial stations.
New royalty rates set by the CRB are set to go into effect on July 15th. The rates will be based on each “performance” of a song (ie. 200 listeners = 200 performances) and will be retroactive to the beginning of 2006.
