Ruiner cancel remainder of summer tour

Ruiner Ruiner has announced that they’ve had to cancel the remainder of their summer tour due to van troubles:

Its currently 5:07am here in Baltimore. We just drove (some of us in the back) of a Uhaul truck from Los Cruses NM to home in about 30+ hours. We are very sorry to say we have to cancel the rest of our summer tour. Our van is no more and we spent more money then we will probably ever admit on it. This band has never been the kinda dudes who give up but we have entirely to much planned in the future to totally fuck ourselves financially.

The band promises to make up all the shows by the end of the year, starting as early as fall, in support of their Bridge Nine release Prepare to Be Let Down.

Lawrence Arms promising fall tour

In their latest blog update – which also apparently spoils Harry Potter – the The Lawrence Arms have spilled the beans on an upcoming fall tour. The band notes:

Did you say “well, that’s all well and good, but when are you coming to my town dickholes? Also, where can I get one of those ‘he loves the cock’ tee shirts?” The answer to both of those questions is soon. Let’s just say that right around the time you’re pulling out your windbreakers and thick socks, you can expect the ultimate rock experience of your young, meaningless lifetime to stagger through your town.

The band released Oh! Calcutta! in 2006.

Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge launches new music column

Pennywise guitarist, Fletcher Dragge has launched a new column at MovieWeb. They explain:

The guitarist of the legendary punk band likes movies. But there are some, that just piss him off.

A self proclaimed connoisseur of the filmic arts, Fletcher isn’t afraid to put the overpayed henchmen responsible for the desecration of modern celluloid storytelling in their rightful place…beneath his size 14 boot!

You can check out his first column here and watch the venerable guitarist take on Fantastic Four, saying it was a: “a fantastic waste of time, money, and the gas I used in my 425 HP planet killer to get there.

Former Dillinger Escape Plan drummer responds to bandmates

After his former bandmates in Dillinger Escape Plan commented harshly on his departure, drummer Chris Pennie has responded in a new interview saying:

It is a little disheartening to read what the guys have been saying about me. I still love the band and I still love the music. But there was some internal strife there and things were happening that I did not agree with. It is what it is, if they want to handle it that way then fine, I don’t want a shit-shouting match or to be a posterboy for somebody else’s press campaign.

Turkish punk band faces jail time for criticizing exams

Think those Not My President shirts caused a stir? In Turkey, you can be arrested for criticizing standardized tests. In an unusual report, a Turkish punk rock band called Deli has been charged for a old song bemoaning the test all Turkish high-schoolers must pass to have a shot at getting into college. According to prosecutors, the song is an insult to the state and thus a crime.

If convicted, the band and its manager face up to 18 months in jail, but could get just a fine or a warning. Turkey, which seeks European Union membership, retains strict limits on expression. The punk song is called “OSYM,” the Turkish acronym for the state’s student selection and placement centre that decides which students go to university, based on a yearly three-hour multiple-choice exam. A sample of the lyrics:

I have gotten lost, You have ruined my future,
I am going to tell you one thing: Shove that exam

Ironically, due to the age of the song, the band members themselves have already passed the exam itself.

Giving Chase drops off Ryan’s Hope tour

Giving Chase has dropped off their Canadian tour with Ryan’s Hope for medical reasons. The band posted the following statement via their website.

So, you might have noticed that a bunch of tour dates have come off our schedule for the next month. Our drummer, the one and only Carlin Brown, has some major health issues that he needs to deal with right away, so there was nothing we could do but cancel our upcoming US/Canadian tour and let our friend heal up properly.

Of course we hate to cancel shows. We want thank all the bands, friends, and promoters who have been helping us out on this tour–everyone has been so unbelievably cool and understanding about this. Most notably Robbie from Hot Rod Touring, Nick & Ryan’s Hope, and Mike & After the Fall…but the list goes on and on. Most of you know who you are, and we love you. We promise to be back as soon as we can!

Ryan’s Hope has salvaged the tour with a bit of rescheduling and the majority of the previously announced shows will go on as planned. The band has also announced an appearance at the Shameless Hours Festival on August 18th at Stage 83 in Lemont, IL. They’ll appear alongside the Lawrence Arms, Spitalfield, Holy Roman Empire and more.

Remember Punknews.org is currently celebrating the tour by holding a contest for free swag. The winners of the ticket giveaway will be drawn and contacted tonight.

July 15th, 2007

It’s Sunday July 15th, 2007. Every once in a while the universe perfectly illustrates one of Tom Waits’ metaphors. This is one of those times. Makes you think.

The people must have something good to read on a Sunday

So the big news this week was that the Dropkick Murphys will for the first time call a major label their home via their own Warner imprint. They should watch Against Me! closely to see how the big league waters are. That band supported their own Warner debut this week with an appearance on Conan O’Brien. The high profile of a major does give you quite a soapbox, just ask Tim McIlrith. The Rise Against frontman laid out just what’s wrong with America this week. Thanks Tim! AFI seems to be doing ok as well, with a potential EP in the works and their electronic side-project / failed spelling test Blaqk Audio set to debut soon. Of course it’s not all wine and roses once you’re signed to one of the big four. Thursday had to hire a team of bloodthirsty lawyers to get out of their deal. They probably didn’t want to get stuck on a package tour with Maroon 5 like the poor Hives did. There is life after the major though, and Thursday need look no further than Bad Religion to see how to do it right. This week Mr. Brett and company talked politics and revealed some behind-the-scene info on their recently released New Maps Of Hell. Less Than Jake are (for the second time) returning to the indie life, and a session at the the Blasting Room sounds like a fine way to shake the stink off.

This week saw the demise of much beloved noisemakers Planes Mistaken For Stars. At the same time we learned that news of Reggie and the Full Effect‘s break-up were greatly exaggerated. The Dillinger Escape Plan (shit)talked their former drummer who recently jumped ship to join Coheed and Cambria. Psychobilly freaks the Horrorpops are short a few members as well. The loss of Geoff, Kamilla and Naomi has left the band a three piece (but there’s WAY more room in the van now).

Our Video Of The Week featured the second segment of an interview and live performance by Against Me!. We also made the exclusive debut of The Falcon‘s video for “The La-Z-Boy 500”. We streamed lots of new audio this week, including Guff‘s new full length Symphony of Voices, an exclusive remix of the Static Age, a reading from Ronen Kauffman new book, the full length from country-punk act Two Cow Garage, and the new record from Sacramento pop-punks Secretions.
