The Ratchets enlist Scott “Gobots” Golley of Lifetime for drumming position

The Ratchets have announced the addition of a brand new member. They enthusiastically explained:

Mr. Scott “Gobots” Golley of Lifetime fame is our new drummer and we couldn’t be happier. Thank you so much to all the drummers out there who offered to try out and to all the fans for their encouraging words.

So now that we have a drummer we figured it’s time to get back to playing some shows. Our first show back will be this Saturday, July 14th, in Easton, PA at the Outrageous on the River Festival with Suburban Legends, Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer, Deals Gone Bad, and others.

As for future Ratchets plans, we’re working on putting together new material and will hopefully be recording either a new EP or perhaps full length this fall. There are no concrete details or dates for a release at the moment.<

Scott Golley joined Lifetime in 1995. He remains an active member of that band.

Contests: Win a skateboard and swag from Rooney

The contests don’t stop at Punknews.org, apparently, as we’ve got another neat little giveaway for you guys. We’ve got a unique little package from Rooney which coincides with the release of their new record, Calling the World.

The band has given us a signed longboard and a Rooney prize pack (tote bag, t-shirt, Calling the World CD) for one winner and a prize package for an additional four others. A longboard is something we’ve never given away but I keep seeing people using them to get around the city so they’re pretty useful and hey, it’s a long skateboard.

You can try your luck by checking out their video and the all-important order form right here.

Davey and Jade talk about BlaqkAudio, potential AFI EP

Davey Havok and Jade Puget recently spoke about their upcoming new full-length together under the name Blaqk Audio. The record is titled CexCells and is due out August 07, 2007. The record has been in the works since 2003.

Though the band spoke quite a bit about that record, of particular note to the zillion or so AFI fans is their plans for the future of that band. Apparently, the group has begun writing again and are hoping to release a new EP culled from the Decemberunderground sessions before the end of the year.

The band also explains their continuously evolving sound and the backlash:

Decemberunderground has brought us to many new people. It’s really fantastic for us, because as far as we’re concerned, the more the merrier. Anybody that we can reach with our music, anybody that is inspired by our music or appreciates it in any way, we appreciate it and it’s fantastic.

We have very wonderful, accepting, open fans. I think they feel that their very, very strong community can only grow stronger with more people who understand and want to be part of what we do.

We’ve been doing this for a while, so anyone who’s that bitter [about AFI going mainstream] probably doesn’t listen to us anymore.

You can find the rest of the text here.

Thursday discusses Island split, potential future labels

Thursday, fresh off the major label treadmill and currently unsigned, recently spoke with MTV about their label status. In particular they discussed the confusion caused by their recent decision to release a retrospective DVD/CD through Victory Records, a label they’ve publicly fought with in the past. Geoff Rickly revealed:

“We thought it would just confuse the f— out of everybody… The line of events that led us back to doing a release with Victory is so convoluted, but really kind of interesting. When we parted ways with Victory, we got our asses kicked. The lawyers killed us. Victory’s lawyers were so strong. So when we started having trouble with Island with certain things, and we were asking to be let go and they didn’t want to let us go — we actually got the lawyers that beat us up from Victory, because they were the fiercest we had ever encountered.”

…When we were touring on the last record, I was like, ‘We’re f—ed — our career’s over. We’re not going to do anything interesting again. Everyone’s starting families. Maybe we’re just getting too old for this. Maybe 10 years will be a good mark to stop at… But at the same time, I felt we had been given such a good opportunity, and I wanted to deliver a few more albums that touched people, or at least try to.

The article explicietly states that the Victory release is a one off deal and the band’s future home has not been chosen. It does reveal that the group talked with Ferrett, Atlantic, Fueled By Ramen, Kotch (for Death Row Records, funny enough), and yes Victory about the future collaborations. Geoff Rickly commented that he was “really interested” in Saddle Creek and Epitaph as well.

The North Atlantic loses drummer

The North Atlantic has parted ways with their drummer, Cullen. He made the announcement via San Diego music blog, Dirtbag’s Delight:

The July 27th show, at Black Box Studios in San Diego, will be my last hometown show with The North Atlantic. Our performance at Denverfest, over Labor Day weekend, will be my last show with the band, period. I’m closing in on a finished dissertation and will be setting my sights on contributing to the world through scholarship, journalism, and playing music in and around my hometown (San Diego for the present). I’d like to invite all our friends and fans in San Diego to join us on the 27th, and help us welcome our good friends Ghost Buffalo to town.

P (Gibby Haynes, Johnny Depp) album reissued

The one and only album by “supergroup” P has been re-issued by Caroline Records. The band was formed by Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers), Johnny Depp (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, some movie about pirates), Bill Carter and Sal Jenco. The album also features guest appreances from Sex Pistol Steve Jones, RHCP’s Flea and the legnedary Chuck E. Weiss.

The band made their debut at the 1993 South by Southwest Music Festival and became the informal house band at the Viper Room, the Los Angeles rock club co-owned by Depp. In 1995, Capitol Records, then home to the Butthole Surfers, released P’s self-titled debut album.

The song, “Michael Stipe,” gained some alternative rock airplay, and sales were respectable if modest considering the fame of the participants. The group proved to be short-lived, as Depp and Jenco returned to acting, Haynes continued touring and recording with the Butthole Surfers, and Carter released solo albums and collaborated with Howe Gelb of Giant Sand.
