Ronen Kauffman: “New Brunswick, New Jersey, Goodbye”

Ronen KauffmanToday, our friend Ronen Kauffman released his first book titled New Brunswick, New Jersey, Goodbye and we’ve got something special to help you get a taste for his work.

Ronen, of course, is a veritable punk and hardcore renaissance man, juggling bands like Zombie Apocalypse, his blog Kamikaze Words and his podcast Issued Oriented. His book is a memoir set against the New Brunswick, NJ hardcore/punk scene of the mid/late 90’s. More than just an engaging personal account, it’s a story about personal growth, coming of age, and the real power of punk and hardcore.

The Cure celebrates 13th birthday with double album

The Cure recently spoke to Billboard about their upcoming thirteenth year together and they detailed plans to celebrate the ominous anniversary. Mastermind Robert Smith noted:

Rather than cut it down, at the stage we’re at with the band, I’m making this record because I want to enjoy the process and be proud of the finished result. It isn’t a commercial concern for me.

What will probably happen is that a double album will come out like a limited edition, mixed by me. A single-disc version, which I assume will be primarily chosen by the label, might get mixed by someone else in order to have a different thing. There’s a concern Cure fans will feel like they have to get both, but the fact is, I’ve agreed to sell the double version at a single album price, because I feel that strongly about it. It is almost impossible to get a double album nowadays. I naively thought my standing as an artist would push aside all objections, but the world gets ever more commercial as it turns.”

Songs will include “Lusting Here in Your Mind” (“It sounds suspiciously like heavy rock to me,” Smith says), “The Hungry Ghost,” “The Perfect Boy,” “Christmas Without You” (“That’s not a very happy song,” he says) and “Please Come Home.”

Smith promises the Cure will play new material during its fall North American tour, but not too much.

The band released The Cure in 2004.

Another “Emo is the devil” news story

Since we know how much you guys enjoy these, here’s another interesting news report which could be described as “emo is the devil.” As usual, the piece focuses on cutting, but also throws in allegations of gender bending and brainwashing.

My Chemical Romance figures into the story heavily with several of the band’s recent videos flashed in the background as the narrator reads questions from another emo quiz.

You can watch the entire news story here.

Foo Fighters talk about album six

On the eve of their reissue of the classic The Color and the Shape, the Foo Fighters recently spoke to Billboard about their next and sixth full length. Tentatively titled Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace, the record is due out September 25th via RCA.

Frontman Dave Grohl noted this about the sound:

It has always been my dream to mix Steely Dan with Nomeansno. If anybody is going to do it, I’d love to be that guy.

There’s four-piece rock band sh*t, but then there are songs where the middle sections turn into this mass orchestrated swarm and ridiculous time signatures.

One song is dedicated to the two Tasmanian miners who were tapped underground for two weeks and, while awaiting rescue, requested an iPod with Foo Fighters music on it to help lift their spirits. Grohl was alerted of the situation by a staffer at the band’s Australian record company and wrote a note to the two men.

The band recently performed at Live Earth and has planned some one-off shows this summer, the Foos will play U.S. gigs in September and October, followed by arenas in the United Kingdom in November and Australia in December. Another U.S. run is on tap for early spring.

Tours: The Hives to tour with Maroon 5… really

Now here’s a show you and your mom can both enjoy. Throwing caution and sensical pairings to the wind, Fagersta, Sweden garage punks the Hives have announced a North American tour opening for adult contemporary soft rockers Maroon 5. Seriously.

The band is apparently still working on that follow up to 2004’s Tyrannosaurus Hives. No release date or any other details are available yet, but as usual there’s a constant flow of cryptic (mis)information from the group on it. For all the fun hit up HivesMusic.com.
