Bouncing Souls / Chunksaah raising money for family of Zach Finch

Chunksaah Records are raising money for the family of Zack Finch. Finch was a well known figure in the Central NJ punk scene, having played in bands like the Gallows, Benchpress 3000 and the Sirs. He was killed when leaving the Stone Pony venue on July 8th in a motor vehicle accident.

To help Zach’s family in this difficult time, the label has started a number of fundraising initiatives. At each of the remaining Wednesday “Punk Nights” at the Asbury Lanes the label will donate a dollar for each person in attendance. Also at the Punk Nights they’ll have a merchandise table setup with proceeds going to the family. Furthermore, the label is auctioning off two pairs of tickets to the Court Tavern show on August 19th featuring the Bouncing Souls, Lifetime, the Ergs and Static Radio NJ.

Both auctions are on now at eBay. You can find them here and here.

Voodoo Glows Skulls talk “Southern California Street Music”

Voodoo Glow Skulls new full length will be titled Southern California Street Music and will hit stores on September 18th via Victory Records. The band commented on the recording and the prominent role Eddie Casillas played in the album’s creation:

We’ve been working on our new album for about a year now, recording it in between tours… It’s been the longest we’ve ever taken on a recording, but we’re stoked to be able to do it at our own pace. Once again, we recorded it ourselves at our very own Dogrun Studios in Riverside, CA. Actually, it’s Eddie, our guitarist’s studio at his home. Where he, the Sapo (our drummer), and Gootzy (our roadie) and Bluto the bulldog all live together. Eddie pretty much produced & engineered the whole entire album on his own. He actually wrote 100 percent of the lyrics too! Everyone else contributed too, but it was mostly Eddie behind this project.

The band plans to perform two free in-store sessions on the day of release, one at midnight in Riverside, CA and the second in Hollywood (stores TBA). Following the release the band will hit the road for a US tour with Left Alone and Knockout. East coast tour dates with Mustard Plug will follow. In November and December the band will hit Europe with Left Alone, Against All Authority and Random Hand.

The new record follows up 2004’s Adiccion, Tradicion y Revolucion.

Dropkick Murphys: “(F)lannigan’s Ball” (alternate version)

The Dropkick Murphys have posted a preview of their upcoming full length The Meanest Of Times. You can hear “(F)lannigan’s Ball” via dropkickmurphys.com or the Boston band’s MySpace page. The version of the song being previewed is sung by Al Barr and Ken Casey, however on the record itself it will feature guest vocalists Ronnie Drew from the Dubliners and Spider Stacy from the Pogues. The band commented:

On July, 2nd, 2007 we flew to Dublin to record the song (F)Lannigan’s Ball with our good friend Spider Stacy from the Pogues and the legend himself, Mr. Ronnie Drew from the Dubliners. We just wanted to take this opportunity to acknowledge Ronnie for being such a kind and humble man, that even in the face of his own serious medical issues and the recent death of his wife he was thoughtful enough to come down to the studio and spend the day teaching us a thing or two about how it’s really done! Oh, and Spider your alright yourself.

The lyrics can be found at the band’s website as well.

The Meanest of Times and is due out September 18, 2007 via the band’s new Warner associated imprint Born & Bred Records. It follows up 2005’s The Warrior’s Code.

Anthony Wilson of Factory Records (1950-2007)

Anthony H. Wilson, co-founder of Factory Records, has died of a heart attack at the age of 57. The influential Factory Records was a Manchester based British independent record label, started in 1978 which featured several prominent musical acts on its roster such as Joy Division, New Order, A Certain Ratio, The Durutti Column, Happy Mondays, and (briefly) James and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.

Besides forming the label, in 1982, he set up The Hacienda nightclub, which became known as perhaps the most famous club in the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It became the heart of the “Madchester” scene, which was known for the embrace of post-punk and dance genres.

Punknews.org offers our deepest condolences to his friends and family.

MP3 of the Week: The Gusto

The Gusto are an-up-and-coming pop-punk outfit based out of Madison, WI. What separates them from the rest of the pack is the tightness and technical proficiency you’d find in a veteran group, yet these guys have only been together for a little over a year. The band recently cut a demo and has been touring across the midwest and east coast, unquestionably gaining new fans and impressing anyone lucky enough to catch their set. Check out their music online, but if they come anywhere near you, I highly suggest checking out their live show…trust me.
