Paint It Black recording update

Dan Yemin of Paint It Black has posted another update on the band’s recording process. The band is working at The Magpie Cage with producer J. Robbins on their next record. He commented:

Started doing vocals last night and blew my voice out pretty quick (after 3 songs), but it was really fun and exciting to hear the songs start to come together on tape after all these months in the basement hammering out these songs. I think we practiced more in the past 4 weeks than we did during the entire writing process for “Paradise”. It’s not that we were over-thinking/over-analyzing everything, but we wanted to be really sure all the arrangements were interesting (not rehashing things we’ve already done, and not sticking to the same old transitions and structures, like verse, chorus, verse, chorus, breakdown) and the tempos were on point. We wanted to make sure that the fast stuff is blazing, and the slow stuff sounds demented and brutal. Also, the writing process was a lot more collaborative, involving much more input from everyone, especially when it came to structure and speed.

The new record will follow up 2005’s Paradise.

Universal Music Group buys Sanctuary Records

Behemoth major label the Universal Music Group has bought UK-based Sanctuary Records for a reported for 44.5 million pounds. While the troubled label does come with 59.8 million pounds of debt, it also features a merchandising and artist management arm that the UMG found attractive enough to acquire.

The Offspring talk about Atom Willard’s departure

Amidst speculation about the motives for his departure, the Offspring have posted a short note about the departure of drummer Atom Willard. While Pete Parada (of Saves The Day) is filling the vacant position, for the album itself, the drums were recorded by session musician Josh Freese (he Vandals, Devo, Guns N’ Roses, Suicidal Tendencies).

Frontman Dexter Holland explained:

Atom and I wanted to drop you guys a little note, since we know people have been talking about why Atom has left the drummer seat for The Offspring.

The simple truth is that Atom had been working on a few of his own projects during our down time, including Angels & Airwaves but other things too. We think that‘s great. Unfortunately, in order for him to see those things through he isn‘t left with enough time to devote to future Offspring stuff. It was a tough choice, but we understand.

Atom‘s been a great drummer for us and we‘re sure Pete will be great too!

The band is currently hard at work on their follow-up to 2003’s Splinter.
